WHITING, Ind. - Defending Midwest Sprint Football League champion Calumet College of St. Joseph lived up to its reputation on Saturday, jumping all over Midway in what became a 50-7 final.
After needing just four plays to score a touchdown on their opening drive, the Crimson Wave immediately added to their lead, as a bad snap on the first play of Midway's ensuing drive resulted in a safety. The lead ballooned to 23-0 by the end of the first quarter.
Calumet scored touchdowns on five of its first six possessions while its defense, the best statistical unit in the MSFL, held Midway to 86 yards of offense, including just 10 on the ground.
The Eagles avoided a shutout thanks to a 9-yard touchdown pass from Tanner Clark to Preston Moore with 9:20 to play in the fourth quarter.
The Midway defense was led by Keegan Hill, who intercepted two passes in the second quarter. He accounted for two of the four turnovers forced by the Eagle defense.
The Eagles drop to 1-4 going into the final week of the regular season, where they will host 1-4 Walsh next Saturday in a 6 p.m. homecoming game.
PLAYOFF POSSIBILITIES
Despite the loss, Midway is still currently very much alive for the fourth and final spot in the MSFL playoffs.
By virtue of Quincy's 42-14 win over Oakland City Saturday, Midway would make the playoffs with a win over Walsh and an Oakland City loss to Bellarmine next week.
Quincy, which concluded its season with a record of 2-4, currently has the No. 4 slot, but the Eagles have the head-to-head tie-breaker over the Hawks by virtue of a 19-14 win in their week-five meeting.
Oakland City, which is 1-4, defeated Midway 14-0 in week two, giving the Oaks the tie-breaker over the Eagles.
A three-way tie is possible if both Midway and Oakland City win. In that situation, the MSFL would implement a tie-breaker to determine who gets the last playoff spot, while the other two teams would play in a consolation game on Nov. 2.
If the Eagles lose to Walsh, their season would be over.
