Eagles set multiple program records, but fall in MSFL playoff debut

WEST TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Though it ended with a season-ending 56-42 loss to top-overall seed St. Mary of the Woods, Midway's debut in the Midwest Sprint Football League playoffs provided numerous memorable moments Saturday.

After falling behind 21-0 at the end of the first quarter, the Eagles rallied to within seven points on three separate occasions, the last on an 8-yard Christian Carter to Ayden Bauwens touchdown pass that made it 35-28 early in the third quarter.

But the Pomeroys lived up to their billing as the No. 1 scoring offense in the MSFL, scoring back-to-back touchdowns while holding a multi-possession lead the rest of the way.

In the loss, Midway set new single-game program records for points, while gaining 451 yards, the first 400-yard game in team history.

The effort was led by Carter who threw for 231 yards, ran for 97 more and accounted for five total touchdowns. His passing yardage, touchdown passes and total touchdowns were the most in Eagles history, as were his 338 yards from scrimmage.

In the second quarter, Carter had a 6-yard touchdown run and a 40-yard touchdown pass to Preston Moore. He added the 8-yarder to Bauwens in the third quarter, the accounted for two more scores in the fourth, one on an 8-yard pass to Chase Williams, the other on a 9-yard run.

He wasn't the only one making electrifying plays. Quintel Thomas topped 100 yards on the ground for the fourth time in five games, running for 141 Saturday with a 71-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. That touchdown run is the longest offensive play ever gained by a Midway team.

Moore narrowly missed getting himself in the record books, as his 106 receiving yards were just one shy of the single-game record set by Williams earlier this year. Williams finished Saturday with 62 yards on seven catches.

The Eagles close the year 2-5 and will look to build on the positive momentum of reaching their first playoff game when they return to action next fall.
