EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Midway failed to get any offense going all afternoon, and Oakland City eventually wore out the Eagle defense, as the Oaks earned a 14-0 win on a suffocatingly hot afternoon Saturday.
This marked the first ever win for Oakland City's two-year old program, while the Eagles dropped to 0-2.
OWNING THE CLOCK
After neither team scored in the first half, the Oaks opened the second with the ball and proceeded to put together an 18-play, 89-yard drive that took up 9 minutes, 47 seconds of time. The drive was capped by a 4-yard touchdown pass from Daniel Honeycut to Devontay Gilbert.
Needed a sustained drive desperately, the Eagles instead went three-and-out, and Oakland City responded with a 70-yard touchdown drive, capped by a 3-yard Anias Mitchell touchdown run.
Oakland City finished with a 43:47-16:16 advantage in time of possession and ran 22 plays to the Eagles' four in the third quarter.
OFFENSE STALLS
The day started promisingly for the Eagle offense, as Keegan Hill completed a 10-yard pass on the opening play. The Eagles also benefitted from a roughing the punter penalty on the same drive, only for the possession to stall again with another punt.
That would be a common theme, as the Oakland City defense held Midway to just 59 yards and six first downs.
Peyton Brazier, Luke Guerrero and Ayden Bauwens all had eight tackles, with Brazier recording three tackles for loss.
Midway will play its home opener against in-state foe Bellarmine at 7 p.m. It will be the sprint football team's first game at its new, on-campus turf field.
