MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway needed just two quarters to set the Midwest Sprint Football League scoring record on Saturday, building up a 70-0 halftime lead before ultimately earning a 78-0 homecoming victory over Oakland City.
This easily broke the previous record of 63 points, set by Saint Mary of the Woods on Sept. 27 of this year. Midway also gained a program-record 625 yards while holding Oakland City to negative-12, by far the best showing by an Eagle team.
RECORD-SETTING DUO
The tone was set right away, as quarterback
Christian Carter and
Ayden Bauwens connected for a 65-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage, with Bauwens blowing past his defender on the outside.
That pair would add another touchdown pass from 46 yards out late in the second quarter as part of a record night for both.
Bauwens finished with 189 yards on six catches and now has 695 receiving yards on the season, the most of any player in the history of the Midwest Sprint Football League. He eclipsed the previous record of 645, set by two different players.
Carter threw five touchdowns in the first half, connecting with
Rylan Robinson from 39 yards andÂ
Tanner Sullivan from 10 before he hit
Quincy Barber for an 11-yard score just before the half, giving him an MSFL-record 22 touchdown passes in a season.
Carter broke the previous mark of 21 set by Bellarmine's Kyle Horvath last season. And after throwing for 322 yards, he now needs just 99 to eclipse Horvath's 1,929 high mark also set last year.
DEMARI DOES IT ALL
The ground attack was just as impressive, thanks to the efforts of
Demari Edelen, who had the first 200-yard rushing game in program history.
Edelen gained 220 on just 18 carries with touchdown runs of 29 and eight yards on back-to-back possessions in the second quarter. His 29-yarder was one for the highlight real, as he cut all the way across the field while juking free or breaking of four tackles on his way to the end zone.
The freshman running back now has 614 yards on the season, breaking the previous program record of 504 set by
Quintel Thomas in 2024.
He was joined in the end zone by
Deondre Henry, who scored from 10-yards out for the only touchdown of the second half.
SEVEN-TURNOVER SPECTACULAR
The MSFL's most turnover-heavy defense had a game for the ages Saturday, and it started on the first possession, when
Preston Moore jumped a route and returned an interception 34 yards for a touchdown.
Moore, the reigning league Defensive Player of the Week, made a strong case for a repeat when he added a second pick-6, this one from 20 yards out, late in the first quarter. It was his second-consecutive, two-interception game.
Not to be outdone,
Martylan Boston had his own interception return touchdown from 35 yards out in the second quarter, the first of two interceptions he recorded on the day.
All told, the Eagle defense had as many touchdowns as the Mighty Oaks had first downs in the first half while also adding a safety on a bad punt snap in the second. They finished with seven takeaways.
Alijah Carter also had an interception while
Byron Wallace,
Trenton Leach and
William Moore all recorded two tackles for-loss.
LOOKING AHEAD
Midway's next two games will be against the same opponent in 5-0 Calumet.
The Crimson Wave are the two-time defending MSFL champion and locked up the No. 1 seed in the Red Division with a 21-3 win over Bellarmine Saturday.
As the No. 2 seed out of the Black Division, the Eagles, now 4-2, will open the playoffs at Calumet on Nov. 8. But before that, the Wave will visit Midway in the regular season finale next Saturday at noon.
