Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Eagles dominate Knights from start, cruise in women's basketball opener

MIDWAY, Ky. - Kylie Gorby's second season as Midway women's basketball coach couldn't have started much better.

Six players scored at least seven points and a swarming defense forced a whopping 34 turnovers in an 86-59 blowout win over Kentucky Christian in the opening game of the women's basketball season Friday night.

Gorby made a point to get longer and more athletic in the offseason. That length and relentless full-court pressure made life miserable for the Knights. The Eagles finished with 21 steals, their most in a game since recording 23 in a game against Indiana East on Feb. 18, 2022.

Seven of those steals came from freshman A'Lyrica Hughes. She did all this despite checking out with 6 minutes, 57 seconds to play in the third quarter.

Hughes, who also had 10 points, was one of three Eagles to score in double figures. Atlantis White led the team with 14, while Jacie Chesser, who had Midway's first seven points, finished with 10.

Two other freshman made a big impact in the fourth quarter. Sarah Baker finished with seven points, six rebounds and three blocks, all recorded in the final 10 minutes. Several of Baker's baskets came off passes by Paige Medley, who had all five of her assists in the final period.

Jermyra Christian tied Baker for the team lead in rebounds and Medley for the game lead in assists.

Each one of Midway's 15 players to see time Friday scored at least one point.

Friday was Midway's first season-opening win since Nov. 3, 2021. That victory also came at home against Kentucky Christian, that one by the final of 93-80.

The Eagles are back home for an immediate turnaround Saturday, hosting Cincinnati-Clermont (Ohio) at 1 p.m.
