Midway Men's Soccer celebrates Senior Day with 4-0 victory over IU East

MIDWAY, Ky. -- After suffering multiple heartbreaking losses earlier in the season, the Midway men's soccer team has turned it around and is playing as well as anyone after pushing their winning streak to four on Saturday evening.

The Eagles celebrated Senior Day on Saturday and did so with another convincing victory. They took a 2-0 lead at intermission and tacked on two more scores in the second half to claim a 4-0 victory over IU East (Ind.) at the Midway Turf Field.

Prior to kickoff, Midway honored their 12 seniors including: Jake Thornhill, Tomas Sarmiento, Fabian Garcia, Blake Warner, Brayden Gillman, Ben Banton, Lucas Perrotte, Steven Mahirwe, Alonso Lira, Austin Perry, Brent Ballard, and Cyrus Tuttle.

Midway, who improves to 7-9-2 overall and 4-4-1 in River States Conference play with the win, got off to a hot start thanks to the play of George Spencer. In the 25th minute, the junior took a beautiful pass from Saleh Ekuchi to score his sixth goal of the season.

Spencer then doubled the lead 14 minutes later in the 39th minute, this time off a feed from Perrotte. Spencer's two goals takes his total to a team-high seven goals on the season.

The Eagles added two more goals in the second half with the first coming in the 50th minute when Ekuchi found Rhys Dickson who netted his sixth goal of the year. The final tally came eight minutes later in the 58th minute when Perrotte found a cutting Gillman for his sixth marker of the season.

In goal for the Eagles was Landon Sorrell who picked up his fifth victory and third shutout of the season.

Since the 2-0 loss to a 'receiving votes' Rio Grande (Ohio) team on Oct. 18, the Eagles have rattled off four victories in a row and are playing their best soccer heading into the postseason.

The win clinched the No. 5 seed in the upcoming RSC Tournament for the Eagles as they will head to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.) for their quarterfinal matchup on Wednesday, Nov. 5. The Pomeroys handed the Eagles a 3-1 defeat earlier this season on September 25.
