Eagle women hold off Grenadiers behind Hughes' career day

NEW ALBANY, Ind. - A'Lyrica Hughes had the highest scoring output of her excellent freshman campaign and Midway overcame late turnover issues to earn an 86-82 River States Conference road win over Indiana Southeast in women's basketball Saturday afternoon.

Hughes was able to get to the rim with ease all game, finishing with 28 points on 12-of-17 shooting. She also had five rebounds and three steals for an Eagle defense the turned 26 turnovers into 34 points.

Despite lagging behind in most statistical categories, the Grenadiers played to a 37-37 tie at halftime and even took the lead in the third quarter before Midway finally gave itself some breathing room with a 14-2 run in stretch of just 2:06 in the third quarter.

Hughes and Atlantis White, who had 16 points and made 4-of-6 3-point attempts, each accounted for six points during the run, with the other basket coming from Jacie Chesser, who also scored 16.

And while they were plus-10 in the turnover battle for the game, it was the Eagles who struggled with ball control in the fourth quarter. Despite shooting 80 percent from the floor in the final 10 minutes, Midway saw its lead drop after having more turnovers (seven) that field goal attempts (five).

IUS got within 80-77 on a Lexi Starr 3-pointer with 1:52 to play, but the Eagles got an immediate answer from Jermyra Christian, who went coast-to-coast for a layup, the last of her 12 points.

Following Midway free throws, Southeast got within 86-82 on an Ella Brown 3-pointer, then proceeded to steal the inbounds pass, with 13 seconds to go, but the game finally ended after a pair of missed 3-point tries.

The win moves the Eagles to 13-9 overall with an impressive 7-3 mark in conference play.

They face a taxing challenge on Tuesday, traveling to Ohio face No. 9 Rio Grande at 7:30 p.m.

Midway actually held a fourth-quarter lead when the teams met back on Dec. 11, but foul trouble allowed the Red Storm to pull away for an 86-74 win.
