MIDWAY, Ky. - Just 3:05 from stealing a historic win, the Midway men's soccer team had to settle for a 2-2 tie in a chippy, thrilling season opener at Georgetown Sunday night.
The Eagles, who entered the night 0-9 all time in season openers, were in prime position to earn new coach Stu Riddle a win in his Midway debut when
George Spencer broke a 1-1 tie in the 69th minute.
Off a free kick, the ball bounced off of multiple players before Spencer got a half step on a Tiger defender. With keeper Lukas Steiner charging in, Spencer got just enough of the loose ball to sneak it between Steiner and the left post.
The lead would hold for nearly 18 minutes before Georgetown got a long-distance equalizer from Logan Anderson, who blasted a shot from nearly 30 yards out just over the outstretched hand of Eagle goalie
Connor Vincent.
The Eagles took a 1-0 lead into halftime on a spectacular shot from
Saleh Ekuchi in the eighth minute, as the junior transfer got great movement on a shot from 35-yards out, which bounced off the hands of an off-balance Steiner and into the goal.
The Tigers had a response for that goal as well, this one from Joe Taylor 9:15 into the second half.
Ben Banton and
David Castilleios were credited with assists for Midway, which prior to Sunday was 0-3 all time against the Tigers.
The two teams, who combined for seven yellow cards in a contentious contests, will play in Georgetown again in nine days.
Prior to that, the Eagles will travel to face Defiance (Ohio) at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
