Game Recap: Sprint Football |

More records fall as sprint football wins for second straight week

MIDWAY, Ky. - For the first time in program history, the Midway sprint football team has won consecutive games and, unsurprisingly, the Eagles did so behind another historic performance from their record-breaking offense.

The Eagles set new single-game records for both passing and total yards while the defense took the ball away five times in a 41-12 win over Midwest Sprint Football League Black Division opponent Quincy (Ill.) at the Midway Turf Field Saturday afternoon.

The only thing Midway struggled to do offensively in the first two weeks was establish a ground game with its tailbacks. That problem got fixed immediately, as Demari Edelen broke free for a 54-yard touchdown on the third play from scrimmage.

Edelen then topped himself by a yard in the second quarter, scoring from 55 yards out. He finished the day with a single-game team record 178 yards as the Eagles ran for 259 as a team.

The run game aided another great performance by reigning MSFL Offensive Player of the Week Christian Carter, who broke his own program record for passing yards with 332 while tying his mark with four touchdowns.

With 905 yards through the air, Carter needed just three games to set Midways single-season yardage record while his 11 touchdown passes are nearly double the previous yearly record.

After connecting with Tanner Sullivan from 10 yards out to give Midway a 13-0 lead in the first quarter, the rest of his touchdown passes went to Chase Williams, the first of which being the longest offensive play in team history.

Williams, who had an 84-yard catch-and-run negated by a penalty in the first quarter, got a do-over in the second, catching a slant and outracing three Hawk defenders for an 89-yard score, acrobatically stretching the ball over the goal line as he was being dragged to the ground.

He would add a 21-yard score in the second quarter and an 18-yarder in the fourth to provide the only points scored in the second half.

His three touchdowns were a single-game Midway record, as were his 136 receiving yards. His four touchdown receptions this season are also a team record.

Williams and Carter even switched roles in the second quarter on a trick play, where the receiver was credited for a 37-yard pass to his quarterback. The offense finished the day with 369 yards through the air and 581 overall.

Defensively, the Eagles were the very model of a bend-but-don't-break unit, surrendering 414 yards but just 12 points while forcing four turnovers. Midway has a league-high 15 takeaways through three games.

Josiah Sander, Preston Moore and Omarion Riddick all intercepted passes Saturday, with Riddick making a highlight-reel play in which he ripped the ball out of top Hawk wideout Gregory Quince in the second quarter as both players were falling to the ground.

The very next play was Williams' 89-yard touchdown catch-and-run.

After winning MSFL Defensive Player of the Week honors against Bellarmine last Saturday, Tristian Euell was a terror on the defensive line again, recording two sacks and a forced fumble. His sacks accounted for 29 lost yards.

Trenton Leach and Brady Bond tied for the team lead with six tackles while Bond blocking a 34-yard Quincy field goal attempt in the first quarter as well.

Aside from his interception, Moore also blasted a 63-yard punt in the first quarter.

Now 2-1, the Eagles have a chance to avenge their lone loss of the season next week, when they travel to face 3-0 Saint Mary of the Woods. The Pomeroys topped Midway 52-36 in week one and are averaging 54.6 points per-game.

The game at West Vigo High School in West Terre Haute, Ind. kicks off at 3 p.m.
