MIDWAY, Ky. - For the second straight time it took the field, the Midway sprint football team had a record-breaking offensive performance against Saint Mary of the Woods.
But unfortunately,
as was the case in last season's Midwest Sprint Football League Playoff opener, it wasn't enough to beat a very good Pomeroy team, as SMWC scored 35 unanswered points in the second and third quarters to take a 52-36 win in the season opener at Midway Turf Field Saturday afternoon.
TEAM RECORDS FALL
In a game that featured 991 yards of offense, a total of nine offensive program records were set, with sophomore quarterback
Christian Carter having a hand in all of them.
Playing in a newly installed, breakneck offense, Carter finished Saturday 21-of-35 for 320 yards and four touchdowns, while adding another 96 yards on the ground.
His passing yards, total yards and touchdown pass totals were single-game Midway records, as were the Eagles' 529 yards of offense.
Receiver
Ayden Bauwens got in the record book too, recording a single-game record 132 yards with two touchdowns. He wasn't the only wideout to break the century mark, as
Quincy Barber had 102 yards on seven catches while also scoring two touchdowns.
Bauwens and Barber are the first Eagle players to have multiple touchdown catches in a game with Bauwens' 77-yard touchdown catch in the fourth quarter being the longest pass play in Midway history.
Midway as a team had a record 364 passing yards and five passing touchdowns, as
Tanner Clark also threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to
Rylan Robinson late in the fourth quarter.
After the Pomeroys took an early 7-0 lead, Midway jumped ahead 13-7 on touchdown catches from Barber (25 yards) and Bauwens (3). The Eagles then stretched their lead on a team-record, 47-yard field goal by
Hayden Cockrell.
Cockrell's boot would have been the longest field goal in Midwest Sprint Football League history entering the day. However, that distance was narrowly topped Saturday, as Calumet's Jeau Vinatieri made a 48-yarder in the the Crimson Pride's 18-0 win over Quincy.
MISTAKES PROVE COSTLY
As well as things went in the first quarter and a half, the wheels fell off halfway through the second quarter and struggles lasted well into the third, as Saint Mary of the Woods scored five touchdowns in six possessions while holding Midway scoreless in that stretch.
Despite holding the Pomeroys to 1.7 yards per-carry on the ground, the Midway secondary gave up 417 yards and four touchdowns through the air to Pomeroy quarterback Jeremiah Tosky, with broken coverages leading to multiple touchdown passes being uncontested.
And even with all its success, the Eagle offense had hiccups as well, turning the ball over four times. SMWC defensive back Byran Simmons intercepted three passes, the last of which dashed Midway's comeback hopes.
Midway cut the deficit to 45-30 the 77-yard Carter-to-Bauwens touchdown pass. Then after a stop, the Eagles moved the ball to the Pomeroy 10-yard line with just over two minutes to play.
But as Carter threw across the middle, Simmons jumped the route and with a full head of steam, shook off two Eagle tacklers and returned the pick 95-yards for a touchdown.
Midway also did itself no favors by committing 14 penalties for 112 yards.
With the win, the Pomoeroys improve to 12-0 all time in road games.
The Eagle defense forced four turnovers, highlighted by a
Keegan Hill interception and
Trenton Leach strip sack.
Midway will look to get its first win in week two, when it travels to Louisville to face Bellarmine at 3 p.m.
