MIDWAY, Ky. - If a close week-one loss to the projected league favorite left any doubt that Midway sprint football was set to make big strides in 2025, the Eagles' performance Saturday may have blown any remaining concerns to smithereens.
The Eagles dominated from the start and earned their first ever win in the Battle for the Bourbon Barrel game against in-state foe Bellarmine, grabbing a 50-0 blowout in Louisville.
The 50 points are the most ever recorded by a Midway team, while also serving as the program's first ever shutout win. The final margin was also by far the biggest ever recorded in a Midway win, the previous being 13
in a 25-12 victory over Walsh last October.
OFFENSE
The Eagles went right down the field on their opening possession, driving 65 yards in six plays in just over two minutes, capping the drive off with a 4-yard touchdown pass from
Christian Carter to
Chase Williams.
The second possession doubled the lead, when Carter connected with
Quincy Barber for a 65-yard touchdown pass on third-and-14
That was the start of another great game for Cater, who completed 13-of-16 passes for 253 yards and three touchdowns. And after throwing three interceptions against Saint Mary of the Woods last week, he threw none on Saturday, thanks in part to him getting to take off the entire second half.
The Eagles got other passers involved in the closing minutes of the first quarter making it 21-0 on a trick play, as
Aaron Parsons took a lateral from Carter and found an open
Charles Adams to make it 21-0. Midway scored again just over two minutes into the second period on a 4-yard
Deondre Henry rushing touchdown.
Carter threw a third touchdown pass from 20 yards out to
Tray Murrell with 8:29 left in the second quarter and scored another on a 1-yard run five minutes later, the last of which made the score 41-0.
Murrell added a second touchdown on a 41-yard pass from
Tanner Clark in the fourth quarter.
While he didn't find the end zone, wide receiver
Ayden Bauwens cracked the century mark for the second week in a row, gaining exactly 100 yards on five catches, with all his production coming in the first half.
DEFENSE
Perhaps even more impressive than the offense was the performance of a defense that rebounded nicely after surrendering over 400 yards passing
in week one.
The unit took the ball away seven times Saturday, tied for the second most turnovers in program history.
Midway had four interceptions, two by
Keegan Hill and one each by
Mike Anderson and
Tristian Euell.
The pick was just one of many great plays by Euwell, who had a team-high 11 tackles, as well as three tackles for loss, two sacks and a forced fumble.
Robert Thompson,
Austin Johnson and
Brady Bond also had forced fumbles, with recoveries made by
Byron Wallace,
Brandon Coulter and
Corlin Penn.
The defense, which set up scoring drives of 21 and 16 yards with two of its first-half interceptions, then put Midway up 43-0 at the halftime break when Thompson sacked Bellarmine quarterback Vernon Duncan with 1:52 remaining in the second quarter.
Midway's 11 tackles for loss were tied for the second most in a game in team history.
SPECIAL TEAMS
It was a strong showing in all three phases as kickers
Kadin Fitch (4-for-4) and
Hayden Cockrell (2-for-2) combined to make all six of their extra point attempts.
Cockrell also got plenty of work in the kicking game, averaging 58.8 yards per-kick with one touchback on eight kickoffs.
UP NEXT
The Eagles, who were previously 0-4 against the Knights, will now look to achieve another program first next week, as they look to earn consecutive wins for the first time.
Awaiting Midway will be a 1 p.m. home game against 0-2 Quincy (Ill.) next Saturday.
