LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Midway looked strong in early sets, but faltered down the stretch, losing to Spalding for the second day in a row in men's volleyball, this time by the final of 28-26, 24-26, 25-19, 25-13 on the road.
The Eagles,
who were swept by Spalding at home on Monday, held off three Golden Eagle set points before Spalding finally got the needed two points to end set one, getting consecutive kills by Brayden Overberg and Tye-Anthony Curtis.
Things went in reverse order in set two, as Midway looked primed to cruise to a win with a 24-20 lead, only for the Golden Eagles to score four-consecutive points to tie the score.
But off a timeout, the Eagles got a great dig from
Gabriel Plata, who made a full-on lunge to get the ball to
Jordan Daily, who passed to
Jaden Alston for a kill to make it 25-24. On the ensuing play, Daily found Alston again for a kill that evened the match at one set apiece.
Alston finished the night with a career-high 15 kills while Daily had 16 assists.
That would be as good as things would get for Midway, unfortunately, as Spalding jumped out to an 8-1 lead in set three and a 6-1 lead in set four to earn a pair of comfortable wins.
Lincoln Anderson had 17 digs while
Noah Fichter added 13 assists in the loss.
Now 0-6 overall, the Eagles open River States Conference play against Indiana East at home Thursday at 6 p.m.
