BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Caique Nunes Maia hit three national cuts, highlighting Midway's weekend at the Mid-South Men's Swimming Conference Championships, which concluded on Saturday.
As a team, the Eagles recorded 232 points, good for sixth place. The University of the Cumberlands won handily with 982, well ahead of Lindsey Wilson, which was second with 710.
Nunes Maia hit the national 'B' standard in 50-yard, 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle. He finished fifth in the 200 with a time of 1:41.97 and and sixth in both the 50 (20.90) and 100 (46.32).Â
He was also a part of five relay teams that finished in the top-six.
The Eagles took fourth in the 200 and 800 free relays. In 200, Nunes Maia,
Jalen Wright,
Rider Burton and
Daniel Maia swam a 1:27, while Nunes Maia,
David Roach,
Caua Kreia and Wright swam a 7:17.10 in the 800.
Taking fifth was the 200 medley team of
Daniel Maia, Nunes Maia, Burton and Wright (1:36.73), while the 400 free and 400 medley team were sixth.
Nunes Maia, Burton, Wright and Roach swam a 3:14.64 in the free, and
Daniel Maia, Nunes Maia, Roach and Wright swimming a 3:36.13 in the medley.
Individually, Roach had a pair of top-10 finishes as well. He was eighth in the 200 butterfly in 2:03.17 and 10th in the 100 fly in 54.70.
Daniel Maia also took 10th in the 100 breaststroke, swimming a time of 1:00.04.
Nunes Maia will now hope to be invited to compete at the NAIA National Championships, which will be from March 4-7. He would be the first member of the Midway men's team to be selected for nationals.Â
