Midway baseball season draw to a close with tournament loss to IUS

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio - Top-seeded Indiana Southeast started fast and answered a Midway rally, eliminating the Eagles from the River States Conference Baseball Tournament with an 11-4, second-round win Friday.

The Grenadiers, the No. 20-ranked team in the country, got a major jolt in the bottom of the second inning, when Kemper Whisman stepped up with the bases loaded and delivered an opposite-field grand slam to right. The lead then stretched to 5-0 on a Trevor Goodwin solo shot in the next inning.

A Midway offense that was shutout in the opening round Friday responded and the Eagles looked to have all the momentum in the fifth inning.

Taylor Voorhees drove in Cole Ginter to cut the deficit to 5-1 in the fourth before a leadoff IUS error paved the way four a three-run fifth. Ginter and Noah Atherholt both had RBI singles before Voorhees had a second RBI on a fielder's choice to make it 5-4.

The Eagles then retired the first two batters in the bottom of the fifth, only for the Grenadiers to turn around and bring home four unanswered runs.

After a double, single and hit batter loaded the bases, a wild pitch managed to bring home two runs, as Eagle catcher Isaac Tencza struggled to track down the loose ball. Whisman then drove in another run with a single before another wild pitch once again made it a five-run game.

The Grenadiers added two more runs in the sixth and held Midway scoreless the rest of the way.

Ginter and Atherholt both had two hits for the Eagles, who end the season with a record of 28-21, tying the single-season school record for wins.
