Despite McKinzie Laswell (SR/Paoli, Ind.)'s career game, Union prevails 89-70
(Barbourville, Ky.) - Midway basketball headed east on Friday night for a matchup against Union College. It was the first meeting between the two schools since the 2010-11 season but, unfortunately for the Eagles, the game ended the same way it did four years ago as Union walked away with the victory once again - this time by a score of 89-70.
Despite the loss, Coach Daniel Price had plenty to be proud of. Following a lackluster game against Pikeville, Me'Lisa Martinez (SR/Nashville, TN) proved she was back on form last night, scoring 22 points - the most she has recorded this season - and grabbing eight rebounds. McKinzie Laswell also had a stellar game, tying her career high with 20 points and grabbing 16 rebounds - a new career high - to give her 33 on the season, enough to place her atop the KIAC in total rebounds and total rebounds per game. Laswell wasn't the only Midway player to put up a fight on the glass. Stephanie Lewis (FR/Newport, KY) pulled down 13 rebounds, bringing her season total to 22 and earning her a spot on the KIAC's top five in total rebounds.
Although his team didn't come out on top, Price said that he found a lot to like in its performance. "I'm really proud of the way my team came out and fought for rebounds. Even though we lost the game, that was one category we were able to dominate. I also thought we got some good looks from the floor, and I'm especially pleased to see Me'Lisa (Martinez) and McKinzie (Laswell) have such strong offensive games."
The Eagles won't have much time to rest as they return to action in the Union College Classic this afternoon. They will face Milligan College at 2 p.m.
