McKinzie Laswell (SR/Paoli, Ind.) joins 1,000-point club in Midway's 91-88 win over IU Southeast
(Midway, Ky.) - It was a thriller in Marshall Gymnasium on Saturday as Midway took down IU Southeast 91-88 in overtime. In a game that remained close all afternoon, the Eagles got the upper hand on offense, outshooting the Grenadiers in all categories but free throws.
Midway was led by Me'Lisa Martinez (SR/Nashville, TN), who poured in 24 points on the afternoon, but it was McKinzie Laswell who stole the show. Late in the first half, she hit her eighth point of the day and became the newest member of Midway's 1,000-point club. She is only the fourth player since 2003, and the first to play since 2008, with 1,000 or more points at Midway.
After the game, she said that she is proud of her achievement, but prefers to focus on how her offense helps the team.
"I feel like our team is a family and it's about more than just one person. I'm really proud to be part of such a small group in Midway basketball history, but I'm just glad to know that my game helps my team win."
Despite Laswell's offensive milestone, the victory didn't come easily for the Eagles. Trailing by three with only seconds to go, Miranda Rone (SR/Bowling Green, KY) stepped up to hit her second shot from beyond the arc to tie the game up. Proving her defensive prowess, she recorded a vital block just seconds later that prevented IU Southeast from regaining the lead, ensuring that the game would go into overtime.
After regulation, the Eagles came alive on offense, taking the lead and never relinquishing it. Head Coach Daniel Price said he was thrilled to see his team perform so well in a clutch situation.
"We're deep into conference play and you have to be able to finish strong to be successful. I was glad to see my players get the look in their eyes that showed me they were ready to do whatever it took to get the win. They showed grit and determination today that proves they can play with the best of teams."
Midway is now 7-4 in KIAC play and, after defeating IU Southeast, is tied for first place in the conference's South Division. The Eagles will be back in action at Asbury on February 10 at 8 p.m.
