Midway Volleyball outlasted by Grenadiers

Midway, Ky. – The Midway University volleyball team continued play in the River States Conference on Monday as they hosted Indiana University Southeast in Marshall Gymnasium.

The Grenadiers (12-6, 5-0 RSC) got the best of the Eagles (6-17, 0-4 RSC) as they came away with the 3-0 sweep (25-14, 25-21 and 25-19).

In the opening set, the Grenadiers jumped on the Eagles as they scored the opening seven points forcing Midway to call a timeout. After the lead grew to 15-3, the Eagles doubled up the visitors on a 10-5 run, but IUS proved to be too much as they won the first set 25-14.

Things would change in the second frame as this time it was Midway that held a 7-6 advantage, but the Grenadiers answered with a 7-0 run to take a 13-7 lead. The Eagles got as close as three down the stretch in the set, but it was IUS that won the set 25-21.

The third set was identical to the first set as it was IUS that jumped out to a 16-5 lead over the Eagles. The Eagles, however, wouldn't go away quietly as they went on a 9-3 spurt cutting the deficit to 20-14. But the Grenadiers hung on in the end to come away with the 25-19 win.

The match featured 64 attacking errors and service errors combined as neither team hit over .120 for the match. The Grenadiers hit .120 for the match, while the Eagles finished with a -.031 hitting percentage.

Junior, Ricky Bowers (Long Beach, Calif.) led the Eagles on offense finishing with six kills while hitting .167 for the match. Bowers also added three solo blocks to her line. Katie Roush (Malta, Ill.) and Emmalee Fleener (Louisville, Ky.) each added four kills in the offensive attack.

Senior, Molly O'Bryan (Cox's Creek, Ky.) ran the offense and finished with 11 of her team's 18 assists for the match. Roush led the defense with 10 digs, while Hannah Payne (Louisville, Ky.) and Ashley Sherrard (Louisville, Ky.) added five digs apiece.

The Eagles are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Berea, Ky. to battle the Mountaineers. In their match earlier in the year on September 17, Midway came away with the 3-0 sweep.
