Midway vs. Marietta Box
Marietta, Ohio – The Midway volleyball team picked up their second win of the season on Friday night at the opening day of the Marietta River City Classic at Marietta (Ohio).
The Eagles (2-5) first took on Marietta in the opener and then they battled Thiel (Pa.) in the nightcap. They return to the court tomorrow for another doubleheader starting with West Virginia Tech and ended with Bluefield (Va.).
Against the Pioneers (3-1), the Eagles battled back from a 25-15 loss in the opening set to come back to win the next three and the match. Midway won the next three sets, 29-27, 25-17 and 25-22, to come away with the 3-1 victory.
Against Marietta, Midway used a combination of dominate defense and timely offense. The Eagles controlled the net for a season high 20 block assists for 10 total blocks.
Ricky Bowers (Long Beach, Calif.) led the way with a game-high seven block assists. The duo of Savanna Harrison (Battle Ground, Ind.) and Breanna Baldwin (Yorktown, Ind.) each collected three block assists apiece.
Bowers also tied the team-high with 10 kills on a .320 hitting clip. Emmalee Fleener (Louisville, Ky.) tallied her first double-double of the season with 13 digs and 10 kills. Fleener also collected three service aces.
Sophomore, Katie Roush (Malta, Ill.) also had a solid game on both offense and defense. Roush finished with a team-high 15 digs to go along with eight kills. Hannah Payne (Louisville, Ky.) pitched in on defense with 14 digs of her own.
Running the offense was the sophomore duo of Ashley Sherrard (Louisville, Ky.) and Courtney George (Louisville, Ky.). Sherrard finished the match with 21 assists and seven digs, while George had 15 assists and seven digs. George also added four service aces to her stat line.
In the nightcap, the Eagles locked horns with the Thiel Tomcats. The Tomcats (1-0) got the best of the Eagles as they won in straight sets, 25-18, 25-20 and 27-25.
