Eagles unable to slow down Bearcats, downed in straight sets

MIDWAY, Ky. -- The Midway University volleyball team played their second River States Conference match of the week on Friday night when they hosted Brescia (Ky.) inside Marshall Gymnasium.

The Eagles (2-11, 0-2 RSC) were unable to slow down the Bearcats' offense as they fell in straight sets 3-0 (25-22, 25-10, 25-22) to the visitors.

Brescia (9-9, 1-1 RSC) tallied a .233 hitting percentage for the match with 39 kills in 103 swings and just 15 errors. Midway also turned in a positive hitting percentage at .124 with 24 kills, but they were unable to slow down the Bearcats.

The home squad fell behind early in the first set, but bounced back later in the set to tie it at 21 all after an ace from Krissy Cummins (Frankfort, Ky.). The Bearcats, however, scored four of the final five points to take the set 25-22.

After a tough second set, the Eagles once again trailed in the third set. Trailing 20-14, Midway went on a 5-1 spurt to get within two at 21-19, but that would be as close as they got as the Bearcats won the second 25-22 and the match 3-0.

Kylie Flatt (Louisville, Ky.) and Claire Thomas (Louisville, Ky.) led the offensive attack for the Eagles combining for 14 of Midway's 24 kills. Flatt finished with eight kills and a .240 hitting clip, while Thomas added six kills for the match. Flatt also chipped in with six digs.

Madi Eberst (Chillicothe, Ohio) saw most of the time at setter finishing with 13 assists to go with her five kills. Ashley Sherrard (Louisville, Ky.) pitched in with six assists as well as eight digs on defense. Freshman, Ashlee Simpson (Somerset, Ky.) led the defense with a match-high 21 digs.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday when they host Oakland City (Ind.) and Kentucky Christian in a doubleheader. Midway takes on Oakland City at 2 p.m. ET before hosting Kentucky Christian at 4 p.m. ET.
