OWENSBORO, Ky. -- After opening River States Conference play on Friday, the Midway women's volleyball team continued league play on Saturday afternoon when they traveled to Owensboro, Ky. to take Brescia (Ky.) at the Moore Center.
The Eagles got the match off to a strong start after winning the first set 25-22, but they were unable to carry that momentum over into the rest of the match as Brescia won the final three sets en route to the 3-1 victory (22-25, 25-11, 25-21, 25-19).
Midway didn't have their normal offensive outing against the Bearcats – who improved to 12-4 overall and 2-1 in league play with the win. The Blue and Gold finished with just 34 kills and a .062 hitting clip, while the Bearcats compiled 47 kills and a .148 attacking clip.
The Eagles – who fell to 6-7 overall and 0-2 in RSC play with the loss – trailed throughout the first set, but back-to-back kills from Alysha Tullar (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) and Brooke Trompler (Campton, Ky.) put the visitors ahead for good.
An attack error from the Bearcats pushed Midway's lead to three before an ace from Tullar sealed the 25-22 opening set victory.
Brescia took control of the second set from the get-go, but it was Midway who jumped out to an early lead in the third stanza. The Eagles held leads of 9-5 and 16-13, but they couldn't make it stand as Brescia rallied for the 25-21 victory.
Midway trailed early in the fourth frame, but an attack error from the Bearcats tied the set at 15 apiece. Unfortunately for the Eagles, the Bearcats responded with a 5-1 run en route to the 25-19 victory in the set and a 3-1 victory in the match.
Alysha Tullar led the way with 16 kills and 12 digs, while Brooke Trompler just missed a double-double with 10 kills and eight digs.
Madi Eberst (Chillicothe, Ohio) collected another double-double with 29 assists and 19 digs, while Ashlee Simpson (Somerset, Ky.) tied Eberst with the team-high 19 digs. Krissy Cummins (Frankfort, Ky.) and Raegan Stevens (Ashland, Ky.) added nine and eight digs, respectively.
The Eagles will return to action on Tuesday when they open a nine-match homestand inside Marshall Gymnasium. They host Oakland City (Ind.) with first serve set for 7 p.m. ET.
