MIDWAY, Ky. -- Following a tough 3-1 loss to Asbury (Ky.) in their last outing, the Midway women's volleyball team returned to action on Friday night when they hosted Brescia (Ky.) in their second to last home match of the season.
The Eagles were firing on all cylinders in the opening frame as they took the early 1-0 lead after winning the opening set 25-21. Unfortunately for the home squad, their fast start fizzled out and Brescia won the next three sets for the 3-1 victory (21-25, 25-20, 25-11, 25-18).
Brescia – who improved to 25-6 overall and 14-1 in River States Conference play – compiled 17 more kills than the Eagles en route to the win. The Brescia offense produced 49 kills and a 0.134 hitting clip, while the Eagles finished with just 32 kills and a 0.072 hitting percentage.
The first set was nip-and-tuck throughout, but Midway went on a late run to claim the opening point taking a 1-0 lead in the match. Trailing 16-15, the Eagles went on a quick 8-2 run that saw them take the lead for good.
Alysha Tullar (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) and Brooke Trompler (Campton, Ky.) had kills, while Trompler teamed with Aisha Pantiere (Hopkinsville, Ky.) for a block as Midway held on for the 25-21 opening set win.
Unfortunately for the Eagles, they weren't the same after winning the opening frame. The Bearcats stormed back winning the next three sets to claim the 3-1 victory. With the win, Brescia also sealed the River States Conference regular season championship.
Leading the way for the Eagles was Alysha Tullar who finished with 15 kills to go with 10 kills for her 12th double-double of the season. Meanwhile, recording her 18th double-double of the season was Madi Eberst (Chillicothe, Ohio) who had 28 assists and 12 digs.
Brooke Trompler chipped in on offense with eight kills, while she led the defensive effort with 18 digs which matched her career-high. Raegan Stevens (Ashland, Ky.) posted six kills, while Ashlee Simpson (Somerset, Ky.) carded 15 digs in the loss.
Midway – who fell to 16-15 overall and 6-9 in league play with the loss – will return to action on Saturday when they host Indiana University Southeast at noon ET in their season finale.
