Box Score MIDWAY, Ky. -- Following a 3-1 victory over Rio Grande (Ohio) less than 24 hours before, the Midway women's volleyball team pushed their win streak to three on Saturday when they defeated West Virginia Tech inside Marshall Gymnasium.
The Eagles posted yet another solid offensive performance as they recorded 24 more kills than the Golden Bears en route to claiming the 3-0 victory (25-15, 25-22, 25-18).
With the win, Jonea Rima's club improves to 12-2 overall and 6-2 in River States Conference play. The Golden Bears, meanwhile, drop to 8-14 overall and 4-5 league play with the loss.
Midway's offense finished the contest with 46 kills which is the most kills in a three-set match since the 2019 team put down 49 in a 3-0 win over Carlow (Pa.) on Nov. 2. They also committed just 18 miscues in their 94 attempts to finish the match with a .298 hitting percentage.
Midway's defense, meanwhile, recorded 49 digs and nine total blocks as they held the Golden Bears to a .053 attacking clip. WVU Tech carded just 22 kills with 17 errors in their 94 swings.
The opening stanza was nip-and-tuck before Midway closed the set on a 10-2 run after holding a 15-13 lead. Alysha Tullar (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) and Brooke Trompler (Campton, Ky.) each put down two kills to spark the rally as Midway struck first with the 25-15 win.
West Virginia Tech got off to a strong start in the second set and doubled Midway up with a 14-7 advantage. Trailing 17-11, Midway rattled off an 11-3 run to take a 22-20 lead forcing the visitors to call a timeout.
The Golden Bears got within one at 23-22, but back-to-back kills from Aubry Koester (Apple Valley, Calif.) and Trompler sealed the 25-22 win and a commanding two sets to none lead.
Midway's offense came alive in the third set where they recorded 20 kills committing just four errors in the 32 attempts to post a .500 hitting clip. Ten of those 20 kills came off the hand of Brooke Trompler who finished the match with 14 kills in 30 attempts for a .300 attacking clip.
Holding a slim 14-12 lead, Midway put the set away with a 7-0 run getting four kills from Trompler as they won the set 25-18 to clinch the 3-0 sweep.
Kaylee Criswell (Rockdale, Texas) posted a perfect outing with seven kills in seven attempts, while Aubry Koester also finished with seven kills. Three others carded five kills apiece.
Valerie Ramos (San Juan, Puerto Rico) finished with 16 assists and nine digs, while Evelyn Milburn (Versailles, Ky.) added 14 assists in the victory. Mariana Rodriguez (Houston, Texas) and Anju Sugiya (Tokyo, Japan) led the defensive effort with 12 and 11 digs, respectively.
Midway is now scheduled to return to action on Tuesday (Oct. 12) when they travel to New Albany, Ind. to battle IU Southeast (Ind.). First serve is set for 7 p.m. ET.
