Box Score MIDWAY, Ky. -- Looking to complete their second consecutive perfect week, the Midway women's volleyball team hosted Ohio Christian for an afternoon matinee in a River States Conference matchup inside Marshall Gymnasium.
The Eagles cruised in the opening two sets and took a commanding 2-0 lead, but the Trailblazers would force the home team to earn the win in the third set. Midway did just that, fighting off two set points to win the set and clinch the 3-0 victory (25-12, 25-7, 30-28).
With the win, Jonea Rima's club extends their win streak to six improving to 15-2 overall and 9-2 in league play. With six conference games remaining – all on the road – the Eagles trail IU Kokomo (Ind.) by one game for the top spot in the RSC West Division.
In the win, Midway posted their best offensive performance of the season. They carded 54 kills committing just 13 miscues in their 105 swings to finish with a season-high .390 hitting clip.
Not only did Midway's offense generate 54 kills – which is the most kills in a three-set match dating back at least 15 years – but they also served 14 aces and held the Trailblazers to a .163 hitting clip.
The Eagles posted a .478 hitting clip in the opening set and a .654 clip in the second to cruise to the commanding two sets to none lead. They trailed 5-3 in the first set but responded with a 15-2 run behind the strong serving of Valerie Ramos.
The junior from San Juan, Puerto Rico served seven consecutive times carding five aces as she finished the contest with a season-high eight service aces. She also tied her season best with 27 assists to go with her 10 digs.
Following a 25-12 win in the opening frame, Midway put together an even bigger rally in the second stanza. Holding a 7-5 lead, the Eagles closed the set on an 18-2 run to claim the 25-7 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Midway was just two points away from clinching the sweep with a 23-19 lead, but OCU went on a quick 5-0 run and had their first of two set points. Midway, however, got back-to-back kills from Brooke Trompler (Campton, Ky.) to seal the 30-28 victory and the sweep all in one.
Alysha Tullar (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) and Aubry Koester (Apple Valley, Calif.) led the offensive attack combining for 19 kills with just one error in their 29 attempts. Tullar tallied 10 kills and a .600 attacking clip, while Koester added nine kills and a .643 hitting percentage.
Trompler added eight kills and seven digs, and Brinley Griswold (Ashland, Ky.) added six, while Tori Hanson (Taylorsville, Ky.) and Tori Richman (Fort Wayne, Ind.) chipped in five kills each.
Assisting Ramos in running the offense was the duo of Evelyn Milburn (Versailles, Ky.) and Wilani Velazquez (Carolina, Puerto Rico) who finished with 11 and seven assists, respectively. Mariana Rodriguez (Houston, Ky.), meanwhile, led the defensive effort with a match-high 19 digs.
The Eagles are scheduled to return to action next weekend when they travel to Pittsburgh, Pa. for a pair of River States Conference matches. They'll battle Carlow (Pa.) on Friday (Oct. 22) and Point Park (Pa.) on Saturday (Oct. 23).
