Box Score MIDWAY, Ky. -- Following a road loss at Oakland City (Ind.) in their last outing, the Midway women's soccer team opened their final homestand of the season on Thursday when they hosted Carlow (Pa.) at the Midway Soccer Field.
The Eagles struck first scoring in the 32nd minute to take a 1-0 lead at intermission while they added two more markers in the second half before holding on for the 3-0 shutout victory.
Following the win, Sherrill Smith's squad improves to 5-7 overall and 3-5 in River States Conference play, while the Celtics drop to 3-10-1 overall and 2-6-1 in league play.
Carlow put a couple of shots on frame in the early stages of the match, but Yasmeen Shalash (Nicholasville, Ky.) was there to make the saves. Shalash was soon playing with the lead after Midway's offense scored shortly after the 30th minute.
The goal came in the 32nd minute and was Midway's first official shot of the contest. Maggie Sauer (Henderson, Ky.) played a thru ball ahead to Morgan Harper (Louisville, Ky.) who found the back of the net for the first time in her collegiate career.
Midway had a golden opportunity to add to their lead in the 40th minute, but Marissa Sauer's (Henderson, Ky.) shot clanked off the crossbar as her team took the 1-0 lead at intermission.
Following a scoreless start to the second stanza, Midway added to their lead. This time it was Mariana Casey (Georgetown, Ky.) who played a perfect cross to Taylor Harley (Lawrenceburg, Ky.) who scored her second goal of the season.
Shortly after pushing their lead to 2-0, Midway once again found paydirt thanks to Madison Land who entered the game just 18 seconds prior. The freshman from Chattanooga, Tenn. scored the first goal of her collegiate career after taking a pass from Maggie Sauer who carded her second assist of the match.
Each team had chances to score in the final minutes, but Midway held on for the 3-0 victory after holding a 14-12 edge in shots and an 11-7 advantage in shots on frame.
Picking up the win in her third shutout of the season was Yasmeen Shalash. The true freshman from Nicholasville, Ky. stopped all seven of the shots she faced as she tallied her fifth win of the season.
Midway is now scheduled to return to action on Saturday (Oct. 23) when they host Point Park (Pa.) for Senior Day at the Midway Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET.
