Eagles overpower Pomeroys running win streak to 10

SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. -- Following a non-conference victory over Asbury (Ky.) on Tuesday, the Midway women's volleyball team returned to league play on Friday night when they battled Saint Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.).

The Eagles carded 17 more kills than the home team and posted well over a .200 hitting clip to come away with the 3-0 sweep (25-17, 25-23, 25-16).

With the win, Jonea Rima's club pushes their win streak to 10 and improves to 19-2 overall and 12-2 in River States Conference play. The Pomeroys, meanwhile, drop to 11-12 overall and 6-9 in league play following the loss.

The win sets up a showdown with IU Kokomo (Ind.) on Saturday (Oct. 30) in Kokomo, Indiana. Midway currently trails the Cougars by a game and a half in the RSC West Division as they'll look to sweep the season series after defeating IUK in a five-set thriller on Sept. 17.

The Eagles finished the contest with 42 kills in their 117 swings as they committed just 14 miscues to post a .239 hitting clip. Midway's defense held the Pomeroys to just 25 kills in their 113 attempts for a .062 attacking percentage.

Following a 25-17 win in the opening frame, the Eagles found themselves trailing 21-19 in the second stanza. Midway then got two kills from Aubry Koester (Apple Valley, Calif.) and back-to-back kills from Brooke Trompler (Campton, Ky.) and Meghan Adams (Hopkinsville, Ky.) to take a 23-21 lead. Koester then posted a solo block to seal the 25-23 win giving Midway the 2-0 lead.

The visitors took control of the third set from the get-go, doubling up the Pomeroys with a 14-7 lead. Trompler put down four kills down the stretch before Alysha Tullar (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) served an ace to clinch the sweep with the 25-16 win in the third frame.

Tullar served a team-high four aces in the win, while adding seven kills to finish with a .261 hitting clip. Brooke Trompler led the offensive attack with 14 kills and hit .290, while adding nine digs to her stat line. Aubry Koester, meanwhile, chipped in nine kills in the win.

Valerie Ramos (San Juan, Puerto Rico) ran the offense and carded 22 assists and five digs, while Evelyn Milburn (Versailles, Ky.) recorded eight assists and five digs. Mariana Rodriguez (Houston, Texas) led the defensive effort with a match-high 22 digs in the sweep.

First serve between the Eagles and Cougars on Saturday is set for noon ET in Kokomo, Indiana.
