Box Score 2 BECKLEY, W. Va. -- Coming off a loss to IU Kokomo (Ind.) in their home finale on Thursday, the Midway University women's soccer team wrapped up their season on Saturday in Beckley, W. Va. with a matchup against West Virginia Tech.
Trailing 2-0 just over 10 minutes into the contest, Midway scored in the 11th minute to cut the deficit in half, but the Golden Bears added on two more goals in the half to take a 4-1 lead at halftime en route to claiming the 4-2 victory.
The loss eliminates Midway's chances of making the conference tournament as Sherrill Smith's squad ends the season at 5-11 overall and 3-9 in River States Conference play.
West Virginia Tech – who improves 6-8-3 overall and 4-5-3 in conference play with the win – got the scoring started early with back-to-back goals in the seventh and 11th minute to claim the early 2-0 edge.
Just 30 seconds after the home team pushed their lead to 2-0, Midway got on the board and cut the deficit in half. Lyla Khanthachack (Groveport, Ohio) found Madison Land (Chattanooga, Tenn.) who scored her second goal of the season cutting the WVU Tech lead to 2-1.
Unfortunately for the Blue and Gold, the Golden Bears tacked on two more goals in the 13th and 27th minutes to take a 4-1 lead at intermission.
The Eagles scored again in the 68th minute when Maggie Sauer (Henderson, Ky.) found Marisol Morales (Lexington, Ky.) who netted her first goal of the season to cut the deficit to 4-2. The goal, however, was too little-too late as WVU Tech held on for the 4-2 victory.
The Eagles carded nine shots with eight of those coming on goal. Madeline Hargrove (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) led the way with three shots, while Madison Land recorded two in the loss.
Yasmeen Shalash (Nicholasville, Ky.) played the entire game in goal as she stopped seven of the 11 shots she faced.
The loss ends the season for the Eagles as they'll soon begin preparing for the 2022 season.
