Midway Women's Volleyball sweeps UNOH and Wilmington moving to 3-0

WILMINGTON, Ohio -- After winning their season opener over the weekend at Pikeville (Ky.), the Midway women's volleyball team continued their road swing to open the season by heading to Wilmington (Ohio) for a tri-match.

In their first match of the night, the Eagles battled the University of Northwestern Ohio and cruised to a 3-0 victory (25-20, 25-15, 30-28), while they completed their second sweep of the night with another 3-0 victory (25-15, 25-8, 25-18) this time over Wilmington.

After winning both ends of the tri-match, Jonea Rima's club improves to 3-0 which for the first time since the 2010 season. Midway is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday (Sept. 7) when they travel to Boyce (Ky.) in Louisville.

Midway 3, Northwestern Ohio 0

The Racers – who fall to 2-4 on the season following the loss – tallied more kills than the Eagles, but they also committed 10 more attacking errors leading to the loss. Midway finished with 29 kills and a .188 hitting clip, while UNOH carded 31 kills with 24 miscues for a .078 attacking clip.

Midway trailed 18-17 in the first set, but a kill from Aubry Koester (Apple Valley, Calif.) helped kickstart a 7-2 run to close the set giving Midway the 1-0 lead overall with the 25-20 win.

The second stanza saw the Blue and Gold sprint to a 10-3 lead before cruising to the 25-15 win, while the third set would need extra points to decide a winner. The Eagles faced set point at 28-27, but three consecutive Racer errors handed Midway the 30-28 win clinching the 3-0 sweep.

Alysha Tullar (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) led the offensive attack with 11 kills to go with her five digs. Tori Richman (Fort Wayne, Ind.) added four kills in 10 swings, while four other Eagles recorded three kills each.

Evelyn Milburn (Versailles, Ky.) tallied 11 assists and Valerie Ramos (San Juan, Puerto Rico) added eight, while Brooke Trompler (Campton, Ky.) led the defensive effort with nine digs to go with a team-high three aces. Mariana Rodriguez (Houston, Texas) chipped in seven digs as well.

Midway 3, Wilmington 0

The Eagles closed out their trip to the 'Buckeye State' by sweeping the home team in their best offensive performance of the young season. They doubled up the Quackers tallying 42 kills in 89 swings for a .360 hitting clip, while the host carded just 21 kills for a .088 attaching percentage.

Midway sprinted to a 9-3 lead early in the opening period before blowing the set wide open opening a 20-7 edge following an 11-4 run. They closed the set on a strong note en route to taking a 1-0 lead in the match after winning the first set 25-15.

The visitors were firing on all cylinders in the second set posting a .500 hitting clip behind 13 kills. Midway put together runs of 6-0, 8-0 and 7-1 in the frame cruising to the 25-8 win and a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.

Similar to the first set, the Blue and Gold soared to a 10-3 lead in the third set and held on for the 25-18 victory sealing the straight sets sweep.

Aubrey Koester led the offensive attack with 11 kills in 12 swings for a .917 hitting clip, while Brooke Trompler and Alysha Tullar added seven kills apiece. Meghan Adams (Hopkinsville, Ky.), meanwhile, added six kills to her stat line.

Valerie Ramos and Evelyn Milburn ran the offense and finished with 16 and 14 assists, respectively, while they also added five and six digs. Trompler led the way with 13 digs, Tullar added seven and Mariana Rodriguez carded 11 digs in the victory.
