Box Score MIDWAY, Ky. -- Following one of their biggest wins in recent memory on Friday night, the Midway women's volleyball team returned to action on Saturday looking to avoid a let down when they hosted St. Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.) in Marshall Gymnasium.
The Eagles won the first set 25-20 and the second set by a score of 25-17 to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match. The Pomeroys got back in the match winning the third set, but Midway battled back and won the fourth set sealing the 3-1 victory (25-20, 25-17, 18-25, 25-21).
With the win, the Eagles complete a perfect 3-0 mark on the week and improves to 7-0 overall and 2-0 in River States Conference play. St. Mary-of-the-Woods, meanwhile, falls to 5-5 overall and 0-2 in league action.
It was a solid outing for the Midway offense as they carded 50 kills in 113 swings for a .265 hitting clip. They also served eight aces and posted 10 total blocks in the win. The Pomeroys finished with 41 kills in 110 attempts for a .182 attacking percentage.
Midway got off to a great start in the opening set when Tori Richman (Fort Wayne, Ind.) put down back-to-back kills before Alysha Tullar (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) did the same as Midway soared to an 11-3 lead. The Pomeroys cut the deficit to three, but Midway grabbed the early lead behind the 25-20 victory.
The second frame saw the visitors staying close as they trailed by just one at 10-9. The Eagles essentially put the set out of the reach following a 6-1 run as they pushed the lead to 16-10. Midway cruised to the 25-17 win in the set to take a 2-0 lead overall.
The third set was a tough one for the Midway offense as they finished with just a .088 hitting clip, while the Pomeroys hit .321 to claim the 25-18 win cutting the overall deficit to 2-1.
The Eagles bounced back in the fourth set hitting .407 with 14 kills in 27 swings. The set was a back-and-forth battle as SMWC claimed an 11-9 lead before Midway went on an 8-1 run to take a 17-12 lead.
The Pomeroys came back and tied the set at 18, but kills from Tullar, Meghan Adams (Hopkinsville, Ky.) and Brooke Trompler (Campton, Ky.) pushed Midway to the 25-21 win in the set and the 3-1 win overall.
Alysha Tullar led the offensive attack with 16 kills in 30 swings for a .400 hitting clip. Tori Richman added eight kills and a .500 attacking clip, while Aubrey Koester (Apple Valley, Calif.) chipped in seven kills.
Evelyn Milburn (Versailles, Ky.) and Valerie Ramos (San Juan, Puerto Rico) each carded 18 assists, while they added seven and six digs, respectively. Mariana Rodriguez (Houston, Texas) and Trompler finished with 10 digs each, while Kaylee Criswell (Rockdale, Texas) put down six kills. Meghan Adams also recorded seven block assists in the victory.
Jonea Rima's club is scheduled to return to action on Friday (Sept. 24) when they host Oakland City (Ind.) at 7 p.m. ET in Marshall Gymnasium.
