Box Score MIDWAY, Ky. -- After suffering their first loss of the season on Friday night, the Midway women's volleyball team had a chance to bounce back on Saturday afternoon when they hosted Brescia (Ky.) in Marshall Gymnasium.
After committing over 20 errors in Friday night's loss to Oakland City (Ind.), the Midway offense returned to form and posted nearly a .300 attacking clip en route to the 3-0 sweep (25-11, 25-18, 25-15) of the Bearcats.
With the win, Jonea Rima's club improves to 8-1 on the season and 3-1 in their four conference matches thus far. Brescia, meanwhile, continues to look for their first victory falling to 0-11 overall and 0-4 in league play.
Midway finished the contest with 31 kills in 72 swings, while they committed just 10 miscues en route to a .292 hitting clip. They also held Brescia to just 20 kills with 26 errors in their 86 attempts to card a -0.070 attacking percentage for the match.
Trailing 4-3 early in the first set, the Eagles essentially put the set away following a 13-0 run after Alysha Tullar (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) stepped behind the service line. Now leading 16-4, Midway coasted to the 25-11 win in the opening set.
The second set saw a tie a nine, but the home team built a 14-9 lead following a 5-0 run. Evelyn Milburn (Versailles, Ky.) served a pair of aces to spark the rally as Midway took a commanding 2-0 lead in the match after claiming the second set by a final score of 25-18.
Holding a 12-11 lead in the third set, Alysha Tullar and Kaylee Criswell (Rockdale, Texas) put down back-to-back kills to spark a rally for the home team. With an 18-14 lead at their back, the Eagles closed the set on a 7-1 run to seal the 25-15 win in the set and the 3-0 victory overall.
Ten different players tallied at lead one kill in the match, while five different Eagles finished with at least three kills. Alysha Tullar led the way with nine kills in 16 swings for a .500 hitting clip to go with her nine digs and three services aces.
Aubry Koester (Apple Valley, Calif.) added six kills off the bench and Brooke Trompler (Campton, Ky.) chipped in four, while Meghan Adams (Hopkinsville, Ky.) and Kaylee Criswell carded three kills each.
Valerie Ramos (San Juan, Puerto Rico) and Evelyn Milburn split time running the offense and posted 11 assists apiece, while Mariana Rodriguez (Houston, Texas) led the defensive effort with 12 kills from the backrow.
The Eagles will now have the next couple of days off before hosting IU Southeast (Ind.) in a River States Conference showdown on Tuesday (Sept. 28) at 7 p.m. ET in Marshall Gymnasium.
