Box Score MIDWAY, Ky. -- Following a bounce back win over Brescia (Ky.) on Saturday, the Midway women's volleyball team wrapped up a five-match homestand on Tuesday when they battled IU Southeast (Ind.) in a River States Conference matchup in Marshall Gymnasium.
The Midway offense didn't have their best outing, but their defense from both the backrow and the net stepped up as the home team claimed the 3-0 victory (25-21, 25-22, 25-23).
With the victory, Jonea Rima's club picks up their ninth win of the season improving to 9-1 overall and 4-1 in conference play. The Grenadiers, meanwhile, fall to 7-8 overall and 3-2 in league play following the loss.
The Eagles carded just 33 kills and a .128 hitting percentage in the win, but they managed to record three solo blocks and 16 assisted blocks at the net. They also had three players record double digit digs and held IU Southeast to 24 attacking errors and a .054 hitting clip.
Kaylee Criswell (Rockdale, Texas) led the way at the net with three solo blocks and four block assists, while Meghan Adams (Hopkinsville, Ky.) and Tori Richman (Fort Wayne, Ind.) carded four and three block assists, respectively.
From the backrow, it was Mariana Rodriguez (Houston, Texas) who led the way with a season-high 16 digs. Brooke Trompler (Campton, Ky.) chipped in 11 digs and Evelyn Milburn (Versailles, Ky.) added 10, while Valerie Ramos (San Juan, Puerto Rico) picked up eight digs.
Anju Sugiya (Tokyo, Japan) – who missed the last two games – returned to the lineup and didn't miss a beat picking up seven digs in the victory.
The Grenadiers led throughout the first set before taking a late 18-14 advantage. Aubry Koester (Apple Valley, Calif.) put down back-to-back kills sparking an 11-3 run to close the set sealing the 25-21 opening set win.
Midway sprinted to an early lead in the second frame as they doubled up the visitors with an 18-9 advantage. IU Southeast battled back and cut the deficit to 21-20 following an 11-3 run, but Midway held on for the 25-22 win taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set was a back-and-forth battle from the start. Trailing 16-13, IUS went on a 6-0 run taking a 19-16 lead, but the Eagles answered with a 5-0 run to regain a 21-19 lead.
IU Southeast responded with a 3-0 rally to take a brief 22-21 edge, but a kill from Trompler and a block from the duo of Emily Slaughter (Gallatin, Tenn.) and Kaylee Criswell handed Midway the 25-23 victory to seal the 3-0 victory overall.
Aubry Koester led the offensive effort with 10 kills, while Alysha Tullar (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) added six kills and six digs. Brooke Trompler chipped in six kills to go with her 11 digs, while Valerie Ramos and Evelyn Milburn carded 13 and 11 assists, respectively.
The Eagles are now scheduled to return to action on Friday (Oct. 1) when they travel to Richmond, Ind. to battle IU East (Ind.) in a River States Conference showdown. First serve is set for 7 p.m. ET.
