Box Score MIDWAY, Ky. – The Midway University women's soccer team closed its two-game River States Conference homestand on Saturday when it faced off with Rio Grande University (Ohio). Despite a Maggie Sauer (Henderson, Ky.) goal, the Eagles lost to the RedStorm 2-1 at Midway Soccer Field.
With the loss, Midway stands at a 3-2-2 record overall and 1-1-1 in the RSC while Rio Grande improves to 1-6-2 and a conference mark of 1-1-0.
The two teams engaged in a physical battle from the opening whistle and both defenses stood firm for the first half hour. In the 36th minute, Rio Grande got on the board and carried that 1-0 lead into the intermission.
In the second half, the RedStorm doubled their lead in the 51st minute. In the 87th minute, the Eagles clawed their way back into the game when Sauer capitalized on a rebound after the Rio Grande goalkeeper saved a free kick off the foot of Marissa Sauer (Henderson, Ky.). Unfortunately, Midway could not find an equalizing goal and suffered its first loss in RSC play.
For the game, Rio Grande outshot Midway 13-8. In goal, Yasmeen Shalash (Nicholasville, Ky.) recorded four saves for the Eagles.
Midway women's soccer will open a three-game road trip on Tuesday, October 4 when it travels to Campbellsville-Harrodsburg (Ky.). Opening kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
