Box Score MIDWAY, Ky. -- Following a road trip to Ohio Christian over the weekend, the Midway women's volleyball team returned to Marshall Gymnasium on Tuesday night when they hosted Brescia (Ky.) for a River States Conference matchup.
The Eagles used an efficient offensive attack coupled with a smothering defensive effort to hand the Bearcats a 3-0 defeat (25-13, 25-6, 25-17) and improve to 11-2 overall and 6-2 in league play with the win.
Midway – who entered the match leading the RSC in hitting percentage – finished the night with a season-high .361 hitting clip. The Eagles defense, meanwhile, held the Bearcats to a -.115 hitting percentage as they committed 22 miscues in their 87 swings.
The opening set was a bit of a back-and-forth battle until Midway finally put the Bearcats away and grabbed a 1-0 lead with a 25-13 opening set victory. The Eagles held a 12-9 lead and closed the set on a 12-4 run to secure the win.
The Eagles really got their offense going in the final two frames where they recorded a .304 and a .517 hitting clip to secure the sweep.
Behind the strong serve of Anju Sugiya (Tokyo, Japan) – who finished with three aces in the win – the Eagles went on a 10-0 run in the second set and a 7-0 rally in the third to clinch the sweep.
Aubry Koester (Apple Valley, Calif.) led the way with a match-high 14 kills, while she also committed zero errors in her 22 swings to card a .636 hitting mark. Hannah Brink (Greenville, Mich.) also notched a .636 hitting clip with her nine kills.
Pilar Daugherty (Las Cruces, N.M.) added a double-double with 21 assists and 10 digs, while Valerie Ramos (San Juan, Puerto Rico) dished out 12 assists in the sweep. Mariana Rodriguez (Houston, Texas) led the defensive effort with a match-high 19 digs.
The Eagles are back in action on Friday (Oc. 14) when they open a three-match road swing with a trip to Oakland City (Ind.). First serve is set for 8 p.m. ET.
