Box Score RICHMOND, Ind. -- On Saturday afternoon, the Midway women's volleyball team traveled to Richmond, Indiana to face off with IU East (Ind.) in a River States Conference West Division match. While the two squads split the opening two sets, the Red Wolves took the third and then held on to win a tight fourth set and the match 3-1 (25-12, 23-25, 25-23, 30-28).
With the loss, Midway falls to 12-3 overall and 7-3 in RSC play while IU East improves to 19-4 overall and 9-2 in the league.
A 5-0 run early in the first set gave IU East a 9-4 lead and the Red Wolves did not look back. While leading 21-12, IU East closed out the set on a 4-0 run.
Tied 5-5 early in the second set, Midway went on a 7-2 run to claim a 12-7 lead. Following a pair of Red Wolves points, the Eagles embarked on another 5-0 run and then held on to pick up a 25-23 win and even the match at a set apiece.
The third set was a back-and-forth affair until IU East went on a 4-0 run to take a 19-15 lead. While the Eagles battled back bravely to within two points on five occasions, the Red Wolves claimed set four by a score of 25-23.
In set number four, the Red Wolves held a 23-18 lead before the Eagles mounted another comeback. Behind three kills by Aubry Koester (Apple Valley, Calif.) Midway was able to tie the set at 24-24. Despite having two opportunities to even the match at two apiece, the Eagles eventually succumbed to IU East and dropped a heartbreaking fourth set 30-28.
Offensively, Koester led Midway with 29 kills for the afternoon while Pilar Daugherty (Las Cruces, N.M.) dished out 43 assists. Koester also led the Eagle defense with 22 digs while Mariana Rodriguez (Houston, Texas) recorded 17. Daugherty had 16 digs for the day while Anju Sugiya (Tokyo, Japan) contributed 14.
Midway women's volleyball will wrap up their current three-game road trip on Tuesday, October 18 when they travel to New Albany, Indiana to face IU Southeast (Ind.) in an RSC match. Opening serve against the Grenadiers is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
