Women's Volleyball extends win streak to three with sweep of Golden Bears

Box Score

BECKLEY, W. Va. -- Following a sweep of Rio Grande (Ohio) less than 24 hours earlier, the Midway women's volleyball team had a quick turnaround as they battled West Virginia Tech on Saturday (Oct. 1) to wrap up a quick two-match road swing.

Thanks to a pair of big-time performances from Aubry Koester and Anju Sugiya, the Eagles wrapped up their road swing on a high note as they left Beckley with a 3-0 sweep (25-23, 34-32, 25-16) of the Golden Bears.

With the win, Jonea Rima's club runs their win streak to three improving to 8-1 overall and 4-1 in River States Conference play. West Virginia Tech, meanwhile, drops to 5-14 overall and 2-1 in league play with the loss.

Koester – who recorded 19 kills in the sweep of Rio Grande on Friday – was key in leading the offensive attack on Saturday. The sophomore from Apple Valley, Calif. posted a season-high 21 kills while finishing with a .280 hitting clip in the win.

Sugiya – a sophomore from Tokyo, Japan – meanwhile, came up with one of her best performances of the season in Saturday's win. She finished with a double-double recording season-highs with 14 kills and 19 digs.

After winning a back-and-forth opening frame, Midway came from behind to win a marathon second set. The Eagles burned their second timeout of the set after trailing 13-8 following a 5-0 run by the Golden Bears.

Midway then trailed 23-18 but rallied with a furious 5-0 run to tie the set at 23. A service error tied the set at 32, but the Eagles finally clinched the 34-32 second set win on a kill by Koester and a bad set by the Golden Bears.

The final frame was all Midway from the opening serve. The Eagles soared to an 8-3 lead before closing the set on a 7-2 run to clinch the 3-0 sweep with the 25-16 win in the final stanza.

Hannah Brink (Greenville, Mich.) had an efficient outing with nine kills and a .316 hitting clip in the victory. Pilar Daugherty (Las Cruces, N.M.) and Valerie Ramos (San Juan, Puerto Rico) split time running the offense dishing out 28 and 14 assists, respectively.

Mariana Rodriguez – a fifth-year graduate student from Houston, Texas – chipped in on the defensive end with 15 digs in the sweep.

The Eagles are scheduled to return to action on Tuesday (Oct. 4) when they host IU East (Ind.) at 6 p.m. ET.
