Box Score MIDWAY, Ky. – The Midway University women's soccer team welcomed Brescia (Ky.) to town on Thursday for a crucial River States Conference match. Unfortunately, a pair of second half goals by the visiting Bearcats proved to be just enough as they escaped Midway with a 2-1 victory.
With the loss, Midway falls to 3-6-4 overall and 1-4-3 in the RSC while Brescia improves to a 5-7-1 record overall and a conference mark of 2-4-1.
Neither team was able to score in the opening half but the Eagles held an 8-4 advantage in shots entering the intermission. The visiting Bearcats struck first when they converted a penalty kick awarded during the 46th minute.
Brescia then doubled its advantage with a goal in the 68th minute. Midway was able to climb back to within a goal when Maggie Sauer (Henderson, Ky.) scored her ninth goal of the season when she struck a free kick that eluded the outstretched hands of the Bearcats goalie. While the Eagles had opportunities, they were not able to equalize and dropped the match 2-1.
For the game, Midway outshot Brescia 17-8 and were led by Sauer's goal. In goal, Caylee Thompson (Midway, Ky.) notched one save in the contest.
Midway women's soccer closes out its regular season home schedule when it faces IU Kokomo (Ind.) in an RSC showdown. Opening kickoff against the Cougars is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Midway Soccer Field with the annual Senior Day ceremony occurring just prior to the contest.
