Eagles outlast Cougars to pick up second RSC victory

Box Score

MIDWAY, Ky. -- After dropping a tight contest at Pikeville (Ky.) over the weekend, the Midway women's basketball team returned to Marshall Gymnasium for just their second home game of the season when they welcomed River States Conference foe IU Kokomo (Ind.).

The Eagles trailed by four following the opening frame, but over the next two periods they outscored the Cougars 37-19 as they would hang on for the 65-54 victory.

Following the win, Chris Minner's squad improves to 3-5 overall and 2-1 in River States Conference play, while the Cougars slip to 0-8 overall and 0-2 in league play with the loss.

The start was less than ideal for the home team as they shot just 31.3 percent from the floor. IU Kokomo went on a 9-0 run early on as they would lead by as many as nine in the opening frame with a 17-8 edge.

The Eagles then got a layup from Aleigha Mucker (Hardinsburg, Ky.) and a three-point play from Dezeree White (Houston, Texas) to cut the deficit to 17-13 following 10 minutes of play.

The Eagles clamped down on the defensive end in the second period where they held IU Kokomo to 18.2 percent shooting. It was a seesaw battle until Midway closed the quarter on a quick 7-0 run that saw them take a 28-23 lead into the locker room.

Kassidy Daugherty (Owensboro, Ky.) kickstarted the run with a triple before Semaj Adams (New Orleans, La.) and Amoni White (St. Louis, Mo.) hit back-to-back layups to close the half.

The Eagles were unable to pull away in the third until they held the Cougars scoreless over the final 3:30 of the quarter. Holding a slim 39-36 lead, the Eagles closed the quarter on an 11-0 run as they extended their lead to its largest of the contest at 50-36 entering the final 10 minutes.

Neither team scored over the opening two minutes of the final stanza as the Eagles saw their lead dwindle to single digits with 3:20 left. They quickly stretched the lead back to single digits as they held on for the 65-54 victory.

Dezeree White notched her first double-double of the season in the win finishing with 18 points and 12 rebounds. She also added four assists and four steals to her stat line. Amoni White added nine points off the bench, while Semaj Adams grabbed nine rebounds.

The Eagles are set to return to action on Saturday (Dec. 3) when they take on St. Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.) in a River States Conference matchup at 1 p.m. ET.
