Midway Women's Basketball earns tough road win at Taylor

Box Score

UPLAND, Ind. -- On Tuesday evening, the Midway women's basketball team traveled to Upland, Indiana for a non-conference game with Taylor (Ind.). Thanks to four players scoring in double digits and a defense that forced 26 Trojan turnovers, the Eagles picked up a 73-63 win.

With the win, the Eagles improve to 1-1 on the season while the Trojans fall to 3-2 overall.

Midway wasted little time on establishing a lead as it started the game on a 13-4 run over the first 5:19. Coming out of the timeout, the Trojans went on a 9-2 run of their own to cut the Midway lead to 15-13 after ten minutes of play.

In the second stanza, the Eagles got on the board first with a three-pointer by Dezeree White (Houston, Texas) to grow the lead to five. Following the two teams trading buckets and a Trojan turnover, Kassidy Daugherty (Owensboro, Ky.) drained her third three of the first half and Midway saw its advantage increase to eight points.

The Trojans had cut the lead to three points before Atlantis White (Houston, Texas) and Emma Gutman (Williamstown, Ky.) hit a pair of long-distance shots and the Eagles entered halftime with a 40-33 lead.

Following the intermission, Taylor went on a 10-4 run to cut the lead to a point before Keia McCullogh (Nashville, Tenn.) converted an old-fashioned three-point play to build the lead back to four. The Trojans cut the lead back down to two again before Semaj Adams (New Orleans, La.) sank a pair of free throws to give the Eagles a four-point lead. Midway was able to get the lead back up to nine points thanks to a 5-0 run to end the quarter.

In the fourth, both teams struggled to score early until Adams hit a jumper to extend the lead to 11. A Taylor three cut the lead to eight. Following a Midway timeout, Dezeree White made a steal and scored on the breakaway to give the Eagles another double-digit lead.

With the visitors holding on to a seven-point lead, McCullogh grabbed a massive offensive rebound and followed up with a successful layup to extend the advantage to nine with just 3:11 remaining in the game. The hosts were able to cut the lead to five with 52 seconds remaining in the game, but the Eagles were able to hit free throws when they were most needed and came home with a 73-63 win.

Midway was led offensively by Dezeree White who scored 21 points while Daugherty recorded 16. Adams (13) and McCullogh (11) also scored in double figures for the evening. On the glass, Adams grabbed nine rebounds while McCullogh snagged eight boards. Jalyn Jackson (Cold Spring, Ky.)  handed out four assists to lead the Eagles while Adams and Dezeree White each picked up four steals.

The Midway women's basketball team will return to action on Friday, November 11 when it plays Cumberland (Tenn.) in the Bevo Francis Invitational on the campus of Rio Grande (Ohio.) Opening tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. EST from Rio Grande, Ohio.
