BEREA, Ky. – On Sunday, the Midway University women's soccer team traveled to Berea, Kentucky looking to pick up their second consecutive win when they faced off with Berea College. Thanks to a goal and assist by Marissa Sauer (Henderson, Ky.) and a strong performance in goal by Caylee Thompson (Midway, Ky.) the Eagles were able to complete their quest and pick up a 3-0 victory.

With the win, Midway improves to 2-1-0 for the year while the Mountaineers drop to 0-4-1.

Neither squad was able to find the back of the net until Mariana Casey (Georgetown, Ky.) scored her first of the year off a through ball by Marissa Sauer to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Midway then closed out the first half scoring when Haylee Applegate (Flemingsburg, Ky.) scored her team-leading third goal of the year in the 44th minute off an assist by Maggie Sauer (Henderson, Ky.).

In the second stanza, the Eagles continued to apply the offensive pressure and it paid off with a Marissa Sauer goal in the 75th minute that made the score 3-0 with the assist courtesy of Taylor Harley (Lawrenceburg, Ky.).

For the game, Midway outshot the Mountaineers 17-15 and were led offensively by Marissa Sauer who recorded a goal and an assist. In between the pipes, Thompson recorded five saves while earning her second consecutive win and picking up her first collegiate shutout.

Midway women's soccer will return to action on Thursday, September 15 when it hosts Freed-Hardeman. Opening kickoff with the Lions is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Midway Soccer Field.
