Box Score MIDWAY, Ky. -- Following a pair of road matches, the Midway women's volleyball team returned to the friendly confines of Marshall Gymnasium on Tuesday (Sept. 20) when they hosted Oakland City (Ind.) in their River States Conference opener.
The Eagles started conference play on the right foot with an easy 3-0 sweep (25-16, 25-10, 25-21) of the Mighty Oaks to kick off a three-match homestand.
With the win, Jonea Rima's club improves to 5-0 and 1-0 in RSC play, while Oakland City slips to 0-6 overall and 0-2 in league play.
The opening set was a bit of a back-and-forth battle before the home team put the set away after holding a slim 14-13 edge. The Eagles picked it up from that point and closed the set on an 11-3 run en route to the 25-16 win in the opening frame.
The Eagles seized control of the second stanza from the start. A pair of kills from the duo of Brooke Trompler (Campton, Ky.) and Aubry Koester (Apple Valley, Calif.) gave Midway a 9-1 lead before cruising to the 2-0 lead after recording a .458 hitting clip in the set.
Midway held a comfortable 16-10 lead in the third, but the Mighty Oaks tied the set at 19 forcing Rima to burn a timeout. From that point on, the Blue and Gold outscored the visitors 6-2 to clinch the sweep with the 25-21 third set victory.
Koester led the way offensively with 11 kills in her 23 swings to finish with a .348 hitting percentage. Trompler added seven kills and five digs, while Hannah Brink (Greenville, Mich.) recorded seven kills and a .417 attacking clip.
Pilar Daugherty (Las Cruces, N.M.) dished out 23 assists and Valerie Ramos (San Juan, Puerto Rico) tallied seven dimes, while Mariana Rodriguez (Houston, Texas) led the way defensively with 13 digs. Anju Sugiya (Tokyo, Japan) added 10 digs, while Meghan Adams (Paducah, Ky.) led the way at the next with six blocks.
The Eagles will continue their three-match homestand on Friday (Sept. 23) when they host IU Kokomo (Ind.) at 7 p.m. ET in Marshall Gymnasium.
