Eagles suffer shutout loss at Calumet College of St. Joseph

WHITING, Ind. -- A week after making history in their first game in program history, the Midway University sprint football team returned to the gridiron on Saturday (Sept. 24) when they traveled to Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.).

It was a tough outing for the Blue and Gold in their first road trip in program history as the Crimson Wave took a 14-0 lead into the locker room before tacking on three more scores in the second half en route to the 35-0 victory.

With the loss, the Eagles drop to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in Midwest Sprint Football League play, while Calumet improves to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

The Crimson Wave controlled every facet of the game as they outgained the Eagles 389-112 in total offense. Midway held a 93-52 edge in passing yards, but Calumet picked up 337 rushing yards compared to just 19 yards rushing for the visitors. The home team also collected 22 first downs, while Midway recorded just four in the loss.

DJ Palmer (Pelham, Ga.) led the offensive attack through the air going 8-for-18 with 88 yards, while he also rushed for a team-high 17 yards.

Penther Alphonse (Lauderhill, Fla.) hauled in two catches for 43 yards and Michael Collins Jr. (Beaumont, Texas) made one reception for 26 yards.

Defensively, Shane Lane (Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.) led the effort with a team-high nine tackles, while Tristian Berrios (Clarksville, Tenn.) and Connor Cook (Aynor, S.C.) each finished with eight tackles. Five other Eagles each posted six tackles in the loss.

Jonathan Flemings – the reigning MSFL Offensive Player of the Week – led the way for the Crimson Wave. The freshman running back had 17 carries for 163 yards and a touchdown.

Dan Davis' squad is now set to return to action on Saturday (Oct. 1) when they travel to Jay Barrett Field (West Vigo High School) in West Terre Haute, Ind. to battle St. Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.). Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. ET.
