Box Score MIDWAY, Ky. – The Midway University women's soccer team opened the home portion of its River States Conference schedule on Thursday afternoon when it welcomed West Virginia Tech to the Midway Soccer Field. Behind a Maggie Sauer (Henderson, Ky.) hat-trick, the Eagles claimed a 7-1 victory over the Golden Bears.
With the win, Midway improves to a 3-2-2 record overall and 1-0-1 in the RSC while WVU Tech stands at 0-10-0 and a conference mark of 0-2-0.
The Eagles opened the scoring in the eighth minute when Marisol Morales (Lexington, Ky.) found the back of the net on a long distance shot that avoided the grasp of the Golden Bears goalie. Sauer then scored her first of the day 10 minutes later off an assist from Mariana Casey (Georgetown, Ky.).
In the 27th minute, Sauer picked up her second of the afternoon on an unassisted effort. Just seven minutes later, Sauer completed her hat-trick when she scored with the assist coming courtesy of Taylor Harley (Lawrenceburg, Ky.). Lyla Khanthachack (Groveport, Ohio) completed the first half scoring outburst when she found the back of the net with the helper coming from Haylee Applegate (Flemingsburg, Ky.) in the 42nd minute.
In the 56th minute, Madeline Hargrove (White House, Tenn.) scored her second of the season on an unassisted effort and Harley made the game 7-0 with a goal in the 58th minute after a scramble in front of the goal. The Golden Bears were able to break up the shutout with a penalty kick goal in the 77th minute to close out the scoring.
For the game, Midway outshot the Golden Bears 25-9 and was led by Sauer's hat trick. In the nets, Yasmeen Shalash (Nicholasville, Ky.) and Caylee Thompson (Midway, Ky.) each recorded a save in 45 minutes of action.
Midway women's soccer will wrap the current homestand on Saturday, October 1 when it hosts Rio Grande (Ohio). Opening kickoff with the RedStorm is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Midway Soccer Field.
