Box Score MIDWAY, Ky. – On Wednesday afternoon, the Midway University women's soccer team opened their 2022 home slate when they hosted Campbellsville-Harrodsburg (Ky.). Thanks to a quartet of goals in each half, the Eagles picked up their first victory of the campaign in an 8-1 win over the Pioneers.
With the win, Midway improves to 1-1-0 on the young season while the Pioneers fall to 0-2-0 for the campaign.
Midway opened the scoring in the 19th minute when Maggie Sauer (Henderson, Ky.) scored her first of the season off an assist from older sister Marissa. The Eagles then doubled their advantage when Haylee Applegate (Flemingsburg, Ky.) scored her first of the afternoon in the 35th minute.
The score became 3-0 Midway in the 41st minute when Cameron Banfield (Cincinnati, Ohio) found the back of the net on an unassisted effort. The Eagles then closed out the first half scoring when Applegate scored her second of the afternoon in the 44th minute with the assist coming from Madeline Hargrove (White House, Tenn.).
After intermission, the visiting Pioneers got on the board when they converted on a penalty kick in the 49th minute. The Eagles got that goal back when Marissa Sauer (Henderson, Ky.) scored in the 54th minute. Just two minutes later, Anna Kessinger (Louisville, Ky.) made the score 6-1 in favor of Midway.
In the 58th minute, Taylor Harley (Lawrenceburg, Ky.) scored to increase the Midway lead to six. The Eagles then closed out the scoring for the afternoon when Madison Land (Soddy-Daisy, Tenn.) found the back of the net off a helper from Banfield.
For the game, Midway outshot the Pioneers 40-6 and were led by Applegate's pair of goals. In the nets, Caylee Thompson (Midway, Ky.) recorded two saves in the contest for the Eagles while picking up the win.
Midway women's soccer is scheduled to return to action on Sunday, September 11 when it travels to Berea, Kentucky to face off with Berea (Ky.). Opening kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Berea College Soccer Field.
