Stout defensive effort leads Eagles to blowout victory over Golden Bears

MIDWAY, Ky. -- Following an easy road win over IU Southeast (Ind.) over the weekend, the Midway women's basketball team opened a brief two-game homestand on Tuesday (Jan. 24) when they welcomed West Virginia Tech to Marshall Gymnasium.

The Eagles used a stout defensive effort coupled with a balanced scoring attack with four players reaching double figures to pick up a dominating 86-48 victory.

With the win, Chris Minner's squad extends their winning streak to three as they improve to 14-7 overall and 9-2 in River States Conference play. The Golden Bears, meanwhile, drop to 13-9 overall and 6-5 in league play following the loss.

Midway – who finished the contest shooting 43.2 percent from the floor and 45.5 percent from three – held the Golden Bears to 40.5 percent shooting for the contest. They also forced WVU Tech into 33 turnovers which led to a dominating 30-2 edge in points off turnovers.

The Eagles shot just 33.3 percent from the floor in the opening 10 minutes, but they caught fire from behind the arc hitting four of their five attempts. Aleigha Mucker (Hardinsburg, Ky.) hit three of those triples scoring nine points as Midway took a 20-12 lead into the second period.

The Blue and Gold picked it up in the second stanza where they shot 47.4 percent and held the Golden Bears to 33.3 percent. Holding a slim 23-15 lead early in the second, Mi'lan Miller (Houston, Texas) scored five straight points to kickstart a 12-0 run that saw Midway stretch its lead to 20, 35-15, with just under four minutes left in the quarter.

Keia McCullogh (Nashville, Tenn.) capped an eight-point second quarter with back-to-back buckets giving her team a 44-20 lead heading into the locker room.

The third quarter saw the Eagles go on a 9-0 run to extend their lead to 31 with just over three minutes left in the period. They would eventually outscore the Golden Bears 28-19 in the quarter and would take a comfortable 72-39 lead into the final stanza.

The home squad would lead by as many as 40, 86-46, in the final quarter en route to the dominating 86-48 victory.

MuCullogh led the way with a game-high 20 points in 16 minutes off the bench. The senior forward hit 9-of-10 from the floor and grabbed six rebounds in the win. Mucker, meanwhile, hit 5-of-9 from the three-point line and finished with 17 points in 23 minutes of action.

Dezeree White (Houston, Texas) recorded 14 points and seven rebounds, while Amoni White (St. Louis, Mo.) scored 13 points and nabbed a team-high four steals in the win.

The Eagles will have the next couple of days off before returning to action on Saturday (Jan. 28) when they welcome Alice Lloyd (Ky.) to Marshall Gymnasium for a 1 p.m. ET tipoff.
