Box Score

MIDWAY, Ky. -- Following a blowout victory over West Virginia Tech earlier in the week, the Midway women's basketball team returned to the hardwood on Saturday (Jan. 28) when they hosted Alice Lloyd (Ky.) for a River States Conference matchup inside Marshall Gymnasium.

Things looked bleak for Midway as they faced a 60-55 deficit with under three minutes to play, but they managed to rally and close the game on a 10-2 run for a 65-62 come from behind victory.

With the win, Chris Minner's squad runs their win streak to four improving to 15-7 overall and 10-2 in RSC play. Alice Lloyd, meanwhile, falls to 14-6 overall and 7-5 in RSC action with the loss.

It was a tough day for the Midway offense as they struggled to get anything to drop all game long. They finished the contest shooting just 29.8 percent from the floor.

It was Midway's effort on the defensive end that proved to be the difference. They not only forced the visitors into 23 turnovers, but they held Alice Lloyd to 36.4 percent for the game.

The opening quarter saw a back-and-forth battle, but it was Alice Lloyd that used a late 4-0 run to take a 13-12 lead into the second. The visitors soon pushed that lead to as many as four early in the second stanza.

Alice Lloyd maintained the advantage and would take a 21-17 lead with under three minutes left until intermission. Jalyn Jackson (Cold Spring, Ky.) tied the game before Amoni White (St. Louis, Mo.) hit a layup at the buzzer giving her team a 27-25 lead at halftime.

The third frame was a struggle for both teams to find any sort of rhythm offensively. Each team would lead by as many as four, but it was Midway that would take a 49-47 edge into the fourth.

Alice Lloyd would lead by as many five early in the fourth and would maintain the same lead with under three minutes remaining. The final three minutes saw Midway clamp down on the defensive end as they held the visitors without a point for nearly three minutes.

The home team took the lead for good with 59 seconds remaining as they hit 5-of-6 from the charity stripe in the final minute to clinch the 65-62 victory.

Dezeree White (Houston, Texas) was the lone Midway player to reach double figures with 22 points and nine rebounds in the win. Kassidy Daugherty (Owensboro, Ky.), meanwhile, chipped in nine points off the bench.

Midway is set to return to action on Tuesday (Jan. 31) when they travel to Oakland City (Ind.) for a pivotal River States Conference matchup. The Mighty Oaks currently hold a two-game lead over the Eagles in the RSC West Division.
