MIDWAY, Ky. – This past weekend, the Midway esports team opened its spring semester when it competed in the CCL Qualifier #1-Midwest Bracket. The Eagles went 2-2 on the weekend and pulled off a magnificent comeback when it overcame the University of Louisville 3-2.
In its first match of the weekend, the Eagles gamers beat Lewis (Ill.) by a score of 3-0. In Hardpoint, Midway won 250-15 and were led by Jonathan Cain (Madisonville, Ky.) who recorded 35 kills, five assists and a kill streak of five. He was ably assisted by Daniel Coffey (Somerset, Ky.) who recorded 20 kills and eight assists while Hunter Yeager (Sulphur, Ky.) chipped in with 19 kills. The Eagles also earned a 6-3 win in Search and Destroy and a 3-1 victory in Control to sweep the match.
In its second battle, Midway suffered a 3-0 loss to No. 5 seeded Davenport (Mich.). The Panthers picked up a 250-54 victory in Hardpoint on its way to the sweep.
In its third game, the Eagles completed a dramatic comeback against Louisville. The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead when they won Hardpoint 250-31. Midway bounced back in Search and Destroy with a 6-2 win that saw Cain earn nine kills while Coffey scored eight kills.
Louisville took a 2-1 lead when it swept Control but the Eagles were able to equalize with a come-from-behind triumph in a second round of Hardpoint. Once again, Cain led the Eagles with 34 kills while Ethan Schott (Jeffersonville, Ind.) recorded 32 kills and 10 assists.
In the final round, Midway was able to claim victory with a 6-3 win in Search and Destroy. Cain scored 15 kills while Schott earned 10 kills.
In its final match of the weekend, the Eagles suffered a 3-0 loss to No. 18 seed Michigan-Flint. Midway fell 250-139 in Hardpoint before losing by a single point in Search and Destroy and taking a 3-2 loss in Control. Cain recorded 95 kills in the three games while Schott picked up 45 kills.
The Midway esports team will return to action on Monday, February 1 when the Call of Duty squad opens its spring regular season with a battle with Malone (Ohio). All Midway esports contests will be streamed at https://www.twitch.tv/midwayuniversity.
