Midway Women's Basketball upsets Oakland City in RSC West Division showdown

Box Score

OAKLAND CITY, Ind. -- After picking up two home wins last week, the Midway women's basketball team hit the road on Tuesday (Jan. 31) for a pivotal River States Conference West Division showdown with Oakland City (Ind.) inside the Johnson Center.

The Eagles took a 42-36 lead into the locker room before extending that lead to 66-50 entering the fourth quarter. The Mighty Oaks got within single digits in the fourth, but the Blue and Gold held on for the 87-79 upset victory.

With the win, Chris Minner's squad runs their win streak to five improving to 16-7 overall and 11-2 in RSC play. Oakland City, meanwhile, drops to 17-4 overall as they suffer their first conference loss of the season falling to 12-1 in league play.

It was a terrific outing for the Midway offense as they shot a season-high 50 percent from the floor. Their defense, meanwhile, held the Mighty Oaks to 41.5 percent for the game as they forced the home team into 23 turnovers which led to 28 points on the offensive end.

The Eagles faced a 13-11 deficit in the first period, but an old-fashioned three-point play by Dezeree White (Houston, Texas) helped kickstart a quick 7-0 run. The senior would score nine points in the first quarter to help give her team a 25-20 lead after 10 minutes of action.

Kassidy Daugherty (Owensboro, Ky.) opened the second stanza with a triple pushing Midway's lead to 28-20. The remainder of the quarter saw a back-and-forth battle before Mi'lan Miller (Houston, Texas) hit a layup at the buzzer giving the visitors a 42-36 lead at intermission.

The opening moments of the third saw Aleigha Mucker (Hardinsburg, Ky.) hit a pair of buckets and White sink a pair of treys as Midway extended their lead to 54-38 after opening the quarter on a 12-2 run.

Oakland City immediately cut the deficit to 12, but back-to-back buckets by Semaj Adams (New Orleans, La.) and White pushed the lead back to 16 as Midway would take a 66-50 lead into the final frame.

The Mighty Oaks got within 12 early in the fourth, but a pair of buckets by White and a jumper by Mucker stretched the lead to its largest of the game at 76-58 with 4:55 remaining.

The home team responded with a 13-2 run that got them within seven, 78-71, with 1:41 left, but the final 1:29 saw Midway hit 9-of-10 from the charity stripe as they held on for the 87-79 victory.

White led the way for the Eagles with a game-high 29 points hitting 11-of-19 from the floor. She also added four rebounds, four assists, and three steals to her stat line. Jalyn Jackson (Cold Spring, Ky.) and Mucker chipped in 13 points apiece, while Adams recorded 10 points, eight rebounds, six steals, and four assists in the win.

The Eagles will now have the next couple of days off before returning to Marshall Gymnasium on Saturday (Feb. 4) when they host Brescia (Ky.). Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. ET.
