Women's volleyball gets back to .500 win non-conference sweep of Boyce

Box Score

MIDWAY, Ky. - Having struggled for an extended period of the season and still down multiple key players, the Midway women's volleyball team has quietly gotten itself back to .500, following a 25-21, 25-16, 25-17 non-conference sweep of Boyce Tuesday night.

Things didn't look good in the opening set, as several communication errors put the Eagles in an early 12-5 hole. Though Midway cut into the lead, Boyce still appeared to be in control after a Vivian Visconti kill gave the Bulldogs a 21-18 lead.

But that would be the final point the Eagles allowed that set, closing on a 7-0 run. The scoring surge started with consecutive kills by Tori Richman and Aubry Koester before expanding via an Emma Krutsinger ace and three Boyce attack errors.

The Eagles expanded on that run by scoring the first four points of a second set that never seemed in doubt, as Midway outhit Boyce .400 to .062.

Set three began in a similar fashion, as Midway quickly took the lead on a Bulldog attack error and a Hannah Brink kill before seeing the advantage balloon to 5-1. This time the Bulldogs responded, though, even pulling ahead 8-7 on an ace by Elena Manon.

Things went back and forth for a bit, but after Koester hit one of her match-high 13 kills to give Midway a 12-11 lead, the Eagles wouldn't trail again, giving them their second win of the season against Boyce and clinching a 6-2 record against non-conference opponents for the season.

Koester, who also had a match-high three service aces, led a balanced attack for Midway, which had a season-best hitting percentage of .397, including a .611 performance in the third set.

Meghan Adams added nine kills, Marinna Liedle had 18 assists and Krutsinger made 12 digs for the Eagles, who improve to 8-8 on the season.

It will be all River States Conference matches for the Eagles from here on out, starting with back-to-back home matches against West Virginia Tech and Rio Grande on Friday and Saturday. The Tech match will begin at 7 p.m. with the Rio matchup starting at noon.
