Eagles conclude 2023 campaign against Saint Mary-of-the-Woods

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- The Midway sprint football team wrapped up year two on Saturday when they hosted Saint Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.) in Frankfort, Ky. at Western Hills High School.

The Pomeroys held a 24-0 lead after the opening quarter and never looked back en route to a 43-14 win.

With the loss, Midway concludes their season with a 2-5 mark, while the Pomeroys, who earned the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Midwest Sprint Football League Playoffs, improve to 6-1 on the season with the win.

The visitors took the opening kickoff and marched 60 yards in eight plays in a drive that resulted in a Derron Hazzard 9-yard touchdown run. After an interception gave the Pomeroys a short field, the lead expanded to 14-0 following a 25-yard touchdown pass by Jeremiah Tosky.

Tosky, who finished the day with 250 passing yards and four touchdowns, tossed his second score of the first quarter when he found Devron Johnson for 43 yards extending the lead to 24-0 after the opening quarter.

Midway finally got on the board early in the second after their defense came thru with a big play. Brady Bond forced a fumble that Luke Guerrero picked up before fumbling it himself, but thankfully Gavin Lay fell on it, setting the Eagles up on the Pomeroy 12-yardline.

The short field resulted in a 4-yard touchdown pass by Connor Baker to Dameon Miller. The Pomeroys immediately answered with a 6-play, 67-yard drive that resulted in another touchdown pass by Tosky.

Tosky, who has now thrown for 1,534 yards in seven games this season, tossed his final score of the day early in the third quarter when he found Carlos Munoz Jr. for four yards pushing the SMWC lead to 36-7.

The Eagles later answered near the end of the third when Baker connected with Charles Adams for a long catch and run. Baker floated a pass to the sophomore, who took it 65 yards to the house for his second touchdown of the season.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, the Pomeroys found the endzone for the final time early in the fourth quarter thanks to a pick-six by Kerry Lacey to cap the 43-14 victory.

Baker, who tossed for 96 yards and two scores, had 10 carries for 95 yards, while Matthew Young had 11 carries for 62 yards.

Peyton Brazier and Luke Guerrero led the defensive effort with eight tackles apiece. Brazier added a tackle for loss, while Guerrero added a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Brady Bond, meanwhile, had five tackles, a forced fumble, an interception, and a pass breakup.
