Eagles soar to easy win over Pomeroys behind strong second half

Box Score

MIDWAY, Ky. -- Following a tough road win earlier in the week, the Midway women's basketball team returned to Marshall Gymnasium on Saturday (Feb. 11) when they hosted St. Mary-of-the-Woods to begin their final homestand of the season.

The Eagles got off to a fantastic start soaring to an 18-point lead early in the second quarter. The Pomeroys battled back and cut the deficit to one early in the third, but the home team would eventually outscore the visitors by 22 in the second half en route to the 88-62 victory.

With the win, Chris Minner's squad extends their winning streak to eight as they improve to 19-7 overall and 14-2 in River States Conference play. The Pomeroys, meanwhile, fall to 14-10 overall and 6-10 in RSC play with the loss.

Midway couldn't have asked for a better start as they shot 55 percent in the first quarter while holding the visitors to just 23.5 percent. Semaj Adams, a freshman from New Orleans, La., was key in the fast start scoring 11 points and hitting a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor in the quarter.

Sereniti Webb (Covington, Ky.) opened the second with a layup before Kassidy Daugherty (Owensboro, Ky.) swished home a trey pushing the lead to its largest of the first half, 30-12, less than two minutes into the quarter.

Midway's lead slowly evaporated, however, after seeing the Pomeroys torch the nets shooting 83.3 percent from the floor in the quarter. St. Mary-of-the-Woods hit 4-of-4 from downtown in the quarter as they cut the deficit to 42-38 at intermission.

The Pomeroys got within one early in the third, but that would be as close as they got. Adams scored nine points in the quarter and Daugherty hit back-to-back triples to cap a 12-0 run as Midway carried a 70-50 lead into the final quarter.

Daugherty later hit two more triples in a fourth quarter that saw the Eagles lead by as many as 27 before cruising to the 26-point victory.

Four Eagles reached double figures in the win led by Semaj Adams who hit 10-of-12 from the floor finishing with 22 points, nine rebounds, and four steals. Dezeree White (Houston, Texas) notched a double-double with 16 points and 10 boards. White also dished out five assists and collected four steals.

Sharpshooters Kassidy Daugherty and Aleigha Mucker (Hardinsburg, Ky.) combined to hit 8-of-15 from behind the arc. Daugherty hit 5-of-7 for her 15 points and Mucker hit 3-of-8 finishing with 11 points. Mi'lan Miller (Houston, Texas) carded seven points and six assists in the victory.

The Eagles are scheduled to wrap up the home portion of their schedule on Thursday (Feb. 16) when they host IU Southeast (Ind.) for Senior Day at 5:30 p.m. ET.
