Stout defensive effort carries Midway to easy win over Bearcats

Box Score

MIDWAY, Ky. -- After picking up a big upset win over Oakland City (Ind.) earlier in the week, the Midway women's basketball team returned to Marshall Gymnasium on Saturday (Feb. 4) when they hosted Brescia (Ky.) for a River States Conference West Division matchup.

The Eagles got off to a bit of a slow start, but would take a 33-25 lead into the locker room before outscoring the Bearcats 32-15 in the second half en route to the 65-40 victory.

With the win, Midway – who runs their winning streak to six – improves to 17-7 overall and 12-2 in RSC play, while the Bearcats slip to 2-21 overall and 1-13 in league play following the loss.

Chris Minner's squad struggled to get into any rhythm all game long, but it was their stingy defense that held the Brescia offense in check. Midway's defense forced the Bearcats into 36 turnovers which led to a 28-14 edge in points off turnovers.

Midway's offense got off to a solid start shooting 57.1 percent in the first quarter, but Brescia nearly matched the Eagles shooting 50 percent. The Eagles trailed 8-4 in the early going, but answered with a quick 8-0 run as they would take a 17-14 lead after 10 minutes of play.

The second quarter was like the first with another back-and-forth battle. The Bearcats were within three, but back-to-back layups by Sereniti Webb (Covington, Ky.) and Amoni White (St. Louis, Mo.) pushed the lead to seven with 5:23 left in the half.

Aleigha Mucker (Hardinsburg, Ky.) then hit a triple in the final minute of the half to help give the home squad a 33-25 lead heading into the locker room.

Mi'lan Miller (Houston, Texas) opened the second half with a trey to push Midway's lead to double figures for the first time. Brescia got within seven before Emma Gutman (Williamstown, Ky.) got a pair of putbacks to push the lead back to double digits.

Midway's offense went cold to end the third as they were held without a field goal for the final four plus minutes.

The visitors made one final push and got within six, 44-38, early in the fourth, but Midway scored 21 unanswered points to cruise to the 65-40 victory. The Eagles forced the Bearcats into 11 turnovers in the final stanza.

Midway's depth was on full display as they had five players score at least seven points in the win. Their bench came up big scoring 38 points with Amoni White and Mi'lan Miller leading the way with 10 points apiece. Keia McCullogh (Nashville, Tenn.) and Dezeree White (Houston, Texas) each scored eight points, while Sereniti Webb finished with seven.

The Eagles will now hit the road and head to the 'Hoosier State' for a conference matchup against IU Kokomo (Ind.) on Tuesday (Feb. 7).
